I have no idea. But his father's family is from the island of Lesvos (Lesbos in ancient times), where the poet Sappho came from. His mother's family are Aromanians, Greek nationals of a minority ethnicity: their home language is closely related to Romanian, and there is some evidence that it was his first language before Greek and English.

I'm absolutely convinced, but annoyingly there's nothing definitive and there are other suggestions (all just as unprovable but less likely). Wikipedia suggests it's because of trade with the Canary Islands, which I find tenuous. The Isle of Dogs logic is a much more elegant and intelligent.
