Heh, no - here it’s pronounced as a hard g. But gif is very similar to eg giflar (kanel giflar are my favorite snack!) and here the leading g is soft.

There is nothing "bizarre" about gif being pronounced jif.
If you believe it when you say language is descriptive not prescriptive, that further illustrates that there are not rules on how we should pronounce acronyms (other than, lets say, the inventor of it says it it said that way.)
If you want to label language as descriptive and use that to determine that gif is pronounced with a hard g, all that shows is that around 30% of people pronounce it the right way as the creator intended, and about 55% of people are insufferable stubborn dbags.

Reminds me of when the opposite happened with Linux. There were the people who said it was easier to pronounce as 'Linn - ux'. The other group said that it should have the same sounds as Linus, pronounced as 'line - ux'. Linus Torvalds attempted to clear it up with a short sound bite.
