I really didn't need to see that!

At the government office I worked at, we would hire students for the summer so they could get real-world work experience in their field. On my side of the shop, that meant computer work in a Unix environment.

At the end of summer, they'd go back to class and I had to (a) scrub their workstation after (b) checking all the files in their working directory for anything that we needed to keep. (Yes, it was bloody tedious!)

The one year, everything went as usual - Summer Student was tasked with doing a lot of shell scripts and programs that would analyze reams and reams of log files.

He did that and did it quite well and the users were happy. So was I, until he left and I had to clean up his machine.

There were dozens of BASH and KSH files, and ... BMP ? Why the heck did he have BMP files? I opened some up to have a look and O M G!

They were pictures of him. In a gimp suit. After the first few, I didn't bother checking any others, instead doing an rm ./*.bmp and went to bleach my eyeballs.

Never told anyone else what souvenirs that student had left behind.
