If train prices are so ridiculous, how do people who don't drive get to other cities?

Apparently it's £342.60 for a train ticket from London to Liverpool, and other routes are similarly expensive. So, if someone didn't drive and regularly needed to go between London and Liverpool, would they have to pay £342 every time?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, it just seems insane to me.
