And considering their hills and mountains are covered with highly flammable dry brush, maybe they should set those aside, and make a fire break around the city. Toronto stopped building in ravines after 1954 when a hurricane caused massive flooding and destroyed all the houses that had been built in ravines.

Fun fact about the San Andreas fault complex is that it’s possibly one of the worst examples you could pick to illustrate that point. It’s still possible though, but it’s not the earthquakes off the California coast that we’re really worried about.

I just wish there was a gas that was heavier than helium (because hydrogen and helium escape by seeping through materials) and lighter than nitrogen (or else it won't float). Hold on, there is. Gas densities in kg/m^3 = g/cm^3 * 0.72 Methane * 0.72 Ammonia * 0.83 Neon * 1.16 Nitrogen

Historically fire was a huge problem on ships, back when they were made of wood and relied on various fire-based lighting solutions. I don't know about now, but it's not a guarantee.

Anywhere close to the shore is going to get buried in huge, ugly condos built by predatory developers taking advantage of victims being in bad positions insurance-wise. Whole walls of overly expensive condos blotting out the charm of the coast.
