Yes

It has a very simple taste and is usable for almost anything. Trappista is the universal "cheap" cheese here.

Industrial waste grade.
truesttrueevertrued@reddit
That's Gici plant based cheese, the real nuclear waste
zenkii1337@reddit
Or just any plant based cheese. No nutrients, no cheese taste, just a lot of empty calories

zenkii1337@reddit
Választhat például sörélesztőt, közelebb íze van as sajthoz, és mondhatni gazdag fehérjében, B12-ben

My husband calls it soap-cheese, but I love it. :D
GregMofti@reddit
I call it cipőtalp, shoe sole 😂
ReturnThrowAway8000@reddit
Nah.
...as far as nutrition goes its prety decent, especially if you also take into account how easy it is to make (relative to alternatives). Thas why it became the "standard cheese" of hungary in commie times.
kilapitottpalacsinta@reddit
My SIL had to avoid all milk products for a month, and she made me taste a fake cheese. It tasted (and felt) like ground up cheese chips mixed with chemical water. Now that's the industrial waste.
HUNdebLeonidasX@reddit
This is probably the best of the trappista if you really want to buy a big one. It melts really good and has stronger flavour. Metro sells them but maybe you can find it in Spar too.
chisell@reddit
You can find it in Spar, CBA, Coop.
WooooshIfYouGay69@reddit
My brother, you bought the best thing ever
Wild_Lifeguard4542@reddit
The taste of Hungary. Some country has gorgonzola, some country has brie, we have trappista.
Make a sandwich with some butter, meat and put trappista on the top of that, after all put it to the oven for 5-10 minutes and put some ketchup on the top after all. You will get the real 70-90s feelings.

So it works with pasta ?
EpresGumiovszer@reddit
Mix it with tejföl, it's common in dorms. :)
riverfollower127@reddit
My go to low effort pasta is spaghetti with 2-3 tablespoons tejföl and grated trappista on top.
cickafarkfu@reddit
It's good if you grate it on pasta&sauce. It's great when it melts imo. and good as a sandwich topping too.

Really ? Is it healthy?
FumeiYuusha@reddit
It's as healthy as a typical cheese can be. Maybe a bit higher in sodium than other cheeses, but not too much higher to be a risk.
Eat it in moderation(just like any other cheese), it tastes good and it is a good source of Protein and Calcium, as well as Vitamin D. As with every other cheese, watch out for its fat content as it can lead to increasing your weight if you overindulge.
ReturnThrowAway8000@reddit
Its healthy.
But its deeply looked down by people of means.
It was picked to be the "default cheese" in commie times because its well rounded and healthy, and easy to make. As far as taste goes, its middle of the road.
Its nice, but it aint some uber exclusive artisan made cheese. Thus people who were born with a silver spoon in their mouth say its crap.
lopmilla@reddit
i'm kinda jokeing. as someone else wrote, its cheep mass produced cheese. i dont think its specifically healthy , but EU food regulations are kinda strong so its decent. tbh i buy it every now and then because i like the taste.

Trappista used to require 4 months minimum to make and it was yellower and harder. Nowadays it is soft and white. The reason is that they went into a cycle with providers where large amounts on short notice were required by the big chains like Tesco, Auchan, etc. They gradually reduced the time and quality of cheese production and people just accepted it. So this is not the cheese of the 70-90-s anymore sadly. You can eat it with no issues. A bit salty for somebody from western countries. My wife actually misses it.

If you tasted any decent cheese after this one, you never buy Trappista again. It's for the poor and feeble minded.

I don’t agree with that. I still like Trappists even though I’ve tasted a lot of other cheeses now. I won’t say trappista is my favorite but I still like it. 🤷🏻♂️

Ok-Obligation2999@reddit
Nothing really. I thought through my whole childhood that i hated cheese. Turns out i have inly tried trappista. Every taste is different but yea i would say its not so pleasant. Tasteless but its also very rubbery.
PsychologicalClue6@reddit
It’s not a good cheese per se but it’s no worse than some other supermarket ones. If you want to try some really nice Hungarian cheeses, I’d recommend buying some artisan/handmade ones. Parenyica is really nice (a smoked cheese unique to the region). You can get some from sellers at local markets named “piac”, such as the indoor one at Vámház körút in Budapest called Fővám tér market.
SabethKamerion@reddit
Parenyica (originally parenica) originates from Slovakia. If you find the artisan/handmade version (on the "piac", as the comment above suggests), go for it, you can trust the ones made in Hungary. If you find it in a supermarket, don't buy it unless it's from Slovakia.
PsychologicalClue6@reddit
Oh interesting! I’ve bought it from markets and the taste difference between that and the supermarket ones was massive. Must try next time I go to Slovakia.
MelodicTelevision993@reddit
The “Vásárcsarnok” at Fővám tér is a real tourist trap. They sell the worse quality on a really high price. Try other local markets like the one in the Fény utca
PsychologicalClue6@reddit
I’ve not had bad experiences, mind you, I speak Hungarian and am familiar with the cuisine so perhaps that helps. I agree that other markets can be better but I recommended this one due to its touristy nature in particular. Not sure how many vendors at Feny street or Bosnyak square (my personal fave) are willing or able to speak English. Vasarcsarnok has great selection and even at an inflated price, I think it’s not too bad. I’ve bought exotic mushrooms and some spices there that were pricier than elsewhere but still cheaper than at the airport, etc

Aldi has a good selection of smaller but better cheeses if you want to buy it from a store. Otherwise buy it from the market.

Its fucking cheese man, not a strange looking mushroom in the forest, jesus
SabethKamerion@reddit
If you want to try some interesting local cheese, check out Pannónia! The original version is the best, but the others are tasty too. The original is an Emmentaler-style cheese that goes great with wine and is perfect for snacking. It’s also good for cooking and baking if you like its sweet flavor.
FuzzyBumblebee3@reddit
Its the most generic and cheapest cheese here, its good and can be used in all cheesy recipes and good on its own as well in like sandwiches and stuff. It doesnt have a strong taste at all its kind of like edami.
SabethKamerion@reddit
The most basic local cheese you can buy. Good for cooking, baking and sandwiches. For wine tasting or as a snack a bit too bland. The brand is perfectly fine, too.
Altruistic-Gold4919@reddit
Its a Boomb! Drop it and run.
spookytomtom@reddit
Worst quality cheese you have ever tried
Healthy_Chipmunk_990@reddit
Standard cheap Hungarian cheese. It is not good. Heck, the cheapest British cheddar tastes better. But while we are all dissing trappista I remember the 90s when it was a decent roll of cheese that went though proper fermentation. Now we have ”trappista” that is more like rubber. Gosh 90s Hungary was good, even the food tasted better.
chariot_on_fire@reddit
Truth is, there are big differences between trappista and trappista. I know that rubber type, it's awful, but different brands can be a lot better, it doesn't have to be like rubber. I remember Tolle being one of the better ones, but I might be mistaken.
eszedtokja@reddit
Nah, cheddar has got nothing on trappista.
IngvarTheTraveller@reddit
That is an objectively wrong opinion
Vegetable_Mud_9055@reddit

Brilliant_Head3297@reddit
Az anyját szemétnek hívni már nem erős?
wiselychoosed@reddit
The most tasteless cheese type. Ok, mozzarella maybe less tasty. But its good for cheesy bread, or any melting cheese stuff.
foki999@reddit
its actually quite nice tbh
u can melt it on sandwiches in the oven
BringOnTheMIGs@reddit
+1 the best is when you make a "melegszendvics" with grated trappista on top and it melts then gets oven-baked yum-yum
Middleman1205@reddit
Lmao u can read what is it on the back side in english...
GGGamer_HUN@reddit
it's a simple cheese.
It melts easily, tastes pretty good and it's not there to impress anyone.
Like yes, a high quality cheese may be more complex, have better texture, more flavor, smell and such but this simply goes on almost everything.
I could compare it to american cheese (the plastic orange one) in the way that it's cheap (lol), mass produced and appeals to the general public (and heavily processed probably, but thats beside the point haha)
It's not half bad, especially if you melt it on sandwiches and in pasta and so on.
