Mik voltak ezek a furcsa kéztetoválások?
Posted by baronvonsacville@reddit | askhungary | View on Reddit | 127 comments

Reach out to the named relatives, if you are not in contact with them, the Care Home and Cemetery could also help you with some data or they can pass your details to the relatives. Just tell them you try to trace back the Hungarian line so you are after his details, if they know any.
baronvonsacville@reddit (OP)
Yes! I’m going to visit family in Ontario in two weeks, and we will absolutely do some research, have some conversations, review some photos and visit relatives and friends while there to see how far back we can get + any additional details. Thank you!
namtaruu@reddit
Ask them if they are okay if you record your conversation - because these are treasure troves later on and you won't remember all of it.
Take a scanner or at least a camera and ask to see their photographs and documents and take pictures of you too, because you are also part of that tree! Also prepare a few questions, because answering a question (do you know what was his job? What did you do over the summers you've spent with them? How were their friends in the village?) these can help people to remember and to start talking. Enjoy, it's a fascinating hobby :)
baronvonsacville@reddit (OP)
Excellent idea yes - we have an audio recording from my grandfather from the other side of our family, where he explained his origins, family history, immigration to Canada, some wartime stories and other things like his hobbies and work. It’s something we would have otherwise probably completely lost otherwise, or had a very challenging time digging into.

Valószínűleg segítene néhány plusz infó. Tényleg 1894-es születésű volt? Zsidó/német/stb. család? Harcolt a háborúk valamelyikében (1894-esként az első is lehetséges), stb.
Ezzel szűkítheted a kört. Mert például a táborokban F betűt kaptak a franciák, stb. Vagy Magyar István a neve. :D
baronvonsacville@reddit (OP)
After some digging, as mentioned in an update to the original post, I’ve discerned that his name was Istvan Molnar - which would fit the MI initials, though reversed. I previously only ever knew of him as the westernized version, Steven, so that explains that aspect. The date of 1894 would fit to his age, so that’s a safe assumption; the star remains a mystery though!
baronvonsacville@reddit (OP)
Szia!

Hi! 1894 seems about the right date of birth as he died in Canada aged 85-90 in 1983. After consulting with the family, it’s not clear where in Hungary he was from, but he was a Danko. Perhaps the markings are from a WWI POW camp? His wife was from Budapest, and it seems they immigrated to North America before WW2, met in NY/Ontario and started a family as my grandfather was part of the Canadian war effort during WWII. Thanks!

baronvonsacville@reddit (OP)
There has been some effort, but not by me; the physical records seem unavailable, as for about the last four generations / hundred-ish years the family has been based in Canada since his immigration over. We’ve got the records for the grandparents downward, but from the Old Country things are seemingly less accessible. Any recommendations, aside from ancestry.com et al?
namtaruu@reddit
Request his (and his wife's, if she was also a Hungarian) naturalization records though the Access to Information Office, I had my ggdad's through them, via a local genealogist (because you need to be either a citizen or reside in Ontario). WW/military records (medical records, etc see some ideas here) could be also useful, or any census etc, because it would be him, who filled out/told the data and even a phonetic Hungarian name/county could help you find his trace. Try to ask the local church if they were members, my ggdad emigrated to Ontario and we found details of his 2nd wife through them, because they had a booklet of their members. Check out obituaries and newspaper.com has a good amount of Canadian papers, check out death records and search for his name, I found ads in a local paper by my relatives. Basically scrape all and any paper traces you find, because any of them could lead you to find his birth place, his marriage date and place, date of arrival, and that could give leads back to Hungary and the earlier family. Also add him with as many details you know to FamilySearch, there are many enthusiastic Hungarian researchers, and maybe someone already done his tree and you can connect the dots.
Same goes to any relatives, friends you know he had, because Hungarians usually emigrated after or with relatives or friends, sometimes staying in the same place or in contact with their Hungarian village members. There are also many places in Canada, where the local history/genealogy group published books or memoires of immigrant ancestors, so check out his known Canadian addresses too.
And if you find any mentioning of Hungary, like a distorted, phonetic name /place etc, come back here, or to r/csaladfakutatas and we'll try to sort it out ;)
baronvonsacville@reddit (OP)

Ancestry and other sites like that only collects the records from familysearch.com
That's the only site which i would recommend.
The hungarian records are public since the 1690s to the present day.
If you want to find anything about them you can only aquire physical copies from the local administration offices.
You can also try to post in r/csaladfakutatas
That's the hungarian genealogy sub, they might answer the tattoo question too.

UPDATE 08/09/2024: I found this obituary for my grandmother’s brother (this man’s son), which identifies him as Istvan Molnar (IM).
This would seemingly explain the monogram / initials, which was previously unclear as he was known in Canada as the westernized version of his name: ‘Steven’ (or simply ‘Steve’).
The date seems to most likely be 1894, which is probably his birth year.
No clarity about the star/asterisk, but it likely denotes specialty, work detail or designation…
All of this points to identification markings made on a prisoner, serviceman or soldier, possibly during or after WW1, though it’s unclear yet which of these is more accurate.
Thus, probably: IM = Istvan Molnar 1894 = birth year/age indication * = ?
No obits available yet for Istvan/Steve, my grandmother (Esther), nor great grandmother (Rozalia (whom we knew as ‘Rose’)), but will keep digging.
Thanks everyone for your input and assistance so far! Will continue to update as the investigation efforts progress. ❤️
—
A dátum valószínűleg 1894, ami valószínűleg a születési éve.
Folytatjuk a frissítést a nyomozás előrehaladtával. ❤️

Hi, I have patients now in their 80s, 90s who have similar style tattoos on their hands and arms, they were made in the army. Some of them were high ranking, one took part in some bad stuff as well (on command), some were just stationary soldiers, never in action. None had deeper meaning, they were just "cool" when they made it, or at least that is what they said. ( I work as a physio with the elderly)
baronvonsacville@reddit (OP)
Thank you so much for this insight!! Service detail seems to be one of the more plausible answers, but we have no info on whether he was in any military or resistance movements, prisons, concentration camps or otherwise.
Would it be completely inappropriate to ask some of said patients for their interpretation? If not, we’d be grateful for any further help understanding the probable meaning / story behind this ink.
Might even be a date / initial commemoration, or sign of devotion to someone; one user shared the following example.

this is an articel about a hungarian politician Máté Imre born 1894 died 1983 so the date adds upp. The reason for the taboo could be that this guy was a politician during the hungarian nazi regime during 1944-45 which is a really bad look sorry.(this doesn't mean he was a nazi symphatizer, but the guy in the articel served the system) He must have emigrated to the usa as he would have served life in prison during the communist regime. There is one young foto of Máté Imre and it kind of resembels your grandpa. And your current family name dosen't matter, as many people have changed their whole name as working for the nazis was such a shame.
There is few sources about him but did your great grandpa died in canada or could he possibly died in LA for some reason? I don't say this guy was your great grandpa but try to find early fotos of him and match them up whith the avaible ones. Find immigration papers and so on . Good luck

In the early 20th century (maybe later as well) this was a widespread style, initials and birth year or other significant year, so if his wife’s name was Molnár, it’s for her probably. The star can stand for “csillagom”, meaning “my star”, meaning darling. (But worth mentioning that the star tattoo was widely used also if someone was in prison)

Michigan and Wisconsin are close to NY/Ontario, but seems like a stretch - possible though. As for prison, also possible, though unlikely; depending on the date, if it is a date, that would also indicate something important, but 1894 or 1954 are curious possible years.

Rutin75@reddit
Thank you! We think He made it from Hungary over to North America between WW1 and WW2, so it’s somehow even more confusing, as it’s unlikely that he would have received it while living in NY/Ontario, where he spent the rest of his adult life, became a grandfather/great grandfather. he was 90 (or very close to that age) when he died.

abszolút google fordítója – úgy tűnik, a magyar túl bonyolult ahhoz, hogy pontosan lefordítsa. az angol a következő:
hi community, i’m requesting some help to understand the peculiar hand tattoos of my late Hungarian great grandfather. He is pictured here with two of his grandchildren on the ugliest couch ever, about a year before he died in 1983. This might be the best photo we have of his hands.
The tattooed letters on his hand seem to be either IW or MI, with what might be his birth year (1894?), and a strange * asterisk. We believe they might be from WW1 - maybe from service, a concentration camp, prison - no one knows, and it was taboo to ask.
Please comment if you’ve ever seen anything like this, have any insight as to what these markings may indicate, or know of a more appropriate community to inquire within.
Thank you!!
