Grok AI being used for non consensual deepfakes and removing clothes from photos... how to protect yourself and prevent this 2026

Keeping Meraki for switches but using Ubiquiti for wireless APs?

Posted by FatBook-Air@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 160 comments

rdesktop7@reddit

Licensing costs for the switches sound absolutely crazypants. as for the APs, having used Unifi gear in several 100+ AP installs, they work well enough.

What the hell

What is the last WHQL-signed NVIDIA Game Ready / Studio driver that officially supports Windows 7 x64?

Posted by ostseesound@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 2 comments

rdesktop7@reddit

IDK where you are getting any of those numbers. Did you ask some AI or something? Nvidia has a driver download page that covers hardware all the way back to the 90's. 475.14 apparently works on the 1050 on win 7 x86\_64 [https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/](https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/)

10% not supported? You have devices that only work in win 11 already? If so, what? windows 10 was only lightly dropped recently. And there will be all sorts of legacy and enterprise need of 10 for a lot of years to come.

Old Firmware on Switches

Posted by dracu4s@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 25 comments

rdesktop7@reddit

Switching doesn't change a lot. So, unless there is a missing feature, or a broken feature, we tend to let our switches do their thing. These aren't windows boxes. Most of them should be able to run without intervention or rebooting for their entire service life. Keep your admin layer behind a protected vlan, and you should be fine.

AI would probably do a better job at being a CEO than most CEOs. That could save far more than firing service desk people would ever save.

As in Fucia OS? That OS rather rewinds a lot of the powerful things that make unix great like file abstraction. What do you see as the benefit of it?

Virtual machines, someone explain the benefits?

Posted by Appropriate_World265@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 35 comments

rdesktop7@reddit

VMs are invaluable in being able to segregate resources. Using them in a full virt situation makes them a lot less efficient. Also, the network environment adds a lot of lag. This normally isn't a problem, but you should really not be using a windows desktop environment for day to day work. It's not possible for it to be really performant without the compute infrastructure being right next to you.

Large Data Backup 300 to 400TB

Posted by MigratingPandas@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 108 comments

rdesktop7@reddit

What are you looking for in backup? Because there are a lot of interesting options out there. A 45 drives tray with something like TureNAS would be cost effective, and rather functional. For how much you save over enterprise waste, you can buy two TrueNAS things. Backup one to the other so you have on site near-line backups. 100%, restores will be faster than any cloud option.

They did not used to, but the last time I used it was \~12 years ago. There was a yearly support cost, but the software would still work out of support. Support existed only to tell executives above me that it wasn't my fault when a restore was impossible. It turns out that for any backup plan, you need a well exercised restore plan.

wtf is the point to vendor account managers? Absolutely useless.

AT&T Switched Ethernet - Network on Demand

I would think long and hard about going with starlink for a business location like this. With starlink having no QOS, and a lot of drop outs most days, and the latency problems cause by the fact that your packets need to go into space all the time, it makes your clients unhappy a lot. That isn't to say that something better might be possible. Remember that getting internet some places is very difficult and expensive. TLDR. Do not cancel any service until you have a good and tested replacement. Hopefully you have success in any of your choices.

Will we see a Linux OS on smartphones that can revive old devices like it can do with computers?

That could work. I do not dive into the windows world all that much, but ansible should be a decent tool for use on a non domain connected system. It also seems to have plugins for allowing it to work on windows: [https://docs.ansible.com/projects/ansible/latest/os\_guide/windows\_usage.html](https://docs.ansible.com/projects/ansible/latest/os_guide/windows_usage.html)

IDK about Manjaro. But most modern desktop distros do not bring up any listening services unless you set them up. With the exception of IPv6 discovery things. And you probably benefit from leaving that open. On a NAT'd network, what are you firewalling against?
