I am a Teacher looking for a career change. Is knowing Python enough to land me a job?

Take a coding bootcamp where they teach you the full stack. Then build some projects. Im changing careers also and plan on being unemployed for the next year

Finally returning to work (forced 3 day a week). Then they took away all our desks...but not everyone, only IT.

They did this at my last job, they told IT we could sit in the storage room with all the computer parts and switches, literally no windows, just a storage room dungeon, pretty much everyone quit / found new jobs, one guy stayed, they never hired anyone else so it's just my dude in his dungeon running all the IT for a company of about 300 people lol.

Sysadmin out there, any work weekend hours and do you get compensate for your weekend hours?

paperlevel@reddit

"No one will remember that you worked over the weekend, except for your children" My boss would always say this, he actively discouraged overworking. ^(-Some bullshit I read on LunkedIn.)

Yeah, I remember standing in line at the grocery store for a bagger position. I had a resume and was wearing a suit and tie, people thought I was the manager. Boomers grew up on a whole different planet or some shit.

I drove to the biggest city in my state, walked into a temp agency and walked out with a job. After a few years of experience I moved to a full time gig.

IT Sales People....seriously

Posted by not_in_my_office@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 462 comments

paperlevel@reddit

Yep, worked in sales for a bit as well, I was actually good at it because I specialized in a low pressure, "here if you need me" kind of attitude. In sales if you don't sell you don't eat, so people tend to get a little aggressive with it.

How do you handle tough days?

I worked with a guy like this at my last job. Said he had 20 years of experience and a Master's in Comp Sci. I have an Associates in CS. Of course they bring him in at a higher level than me, but also I need to train him. Dude seriously did not know anything, how to login to a server, connect a monitor, asked him to backup a PC and he formatted it instead. I had to do his job and mine for 2 years, then I just quit. Shortly after I left they finally realized he was useless and fired him.

You made the mistake of being good at your job, so now folks know you're the one who gets it done on time. There's no turning back now, you have to find a new job.

The LinkedIn was just a formality. I had an inside reference from a buddy of mine, which allowed both him and the recruiter to get a bonus pay from "finding" me.

My manager's quote after today's meeting "You need to miss some important events, such as your dad/moms bday, anniversaries/weddings, and sacrifice more to move up at work. That's how I got to where I am at.."

20 years from now, the only person who will remember you worked late are your kids. One of my best ever managers used to say this often. He actively discouraged overwork.

Going on LinkedIn, making a profile in 30 minutes, getting contacted by a recruiter later that day, having a series of phone interviews, getting an offer for 80% more than I was making at the time, telling my boss to go to hell after I had been there for 5 years in an entry-level position working well above my paygrade and being denied multiple opportunities for advancement. **HOLY SH\*T IT'S REALLY THAT SIMPLE?!**

Same here, was passed up for a promotion for the 3rd time, said to myself I'm overqualified for this job, landed a new one within the week. Gave 2 weeks notice and my employer was beyond pissed, told me to have a report on his desk by the end of the day of everything I was working on and what needed to be done. I said sure but it won't be today, let's talk about it over the next 2 weeks. He said, on second thought forget about it, you're fired. I said fine with me and walked out. Missed out on a whole paycheck but it was worth it to get out of there.

Backpack recommendations for carrying two 15 inch windows laptops

My favorite backpack came from Timberland, I actually get compliments on it, real tough looking. That said, I prefer to carry a briefcase if possible, just looks more professional.

I like Mac for personal use, but I always end up needing Windows and x86 for business, so I would go for a Dell XPS 15. I currently have a HP Z-book and a Dell Latitude, but the XPS looks nice.

Why do so many Sysadmins allow themselves to get burned out?

I in no way meant to imply OP was lazy, I was only speaking of my own situation. And to your other point, I was not taking advantage of my employer, I was taking advantage of the cards I was dealt, and made the best of a tough situation.

paperlevel@reddit

Depends on your comfort level and goals, at my last job I was 100% being taken advantage of and I knew it... so I used it to my advantage. How? I wanted to get that experience on my resume. I wanted to get my hands into everything. When company X contacted me on LinkedIn, I interviewed and got the job, more money and better team for the same type of work. Meanwhile the lazy people got left behind.

Former (thank god) employer rejected my notice and made the resignation effective immediately - it’s so funny

Same thing happened to me at my last job, was there for 5 years, 24/7 on call support, longer than anyone else, handled massive projects solo, never saw a raise or promotion, finally got a better offer somewhere else and gave notice, fired me on the spot, no "thanks for the 5 years", "congrats on the new job" nothing, just turn in your laptop and get out. Best decision of my life, new job is better in every way. Good luck to you OP

paperlevel@reddit (OP)

I appreciate this response, in fact that's what I did was move on to a tech focused company where I am paid more and appreciated. For many years I worked in healthcare IT where no one understood what I did or how important it was, and how little I was being paid compared to other opportunities out there.
