I know the cliche is " cocane and hookers" but we literally had cocane avaliable in the break room and prostitutes were hired to entertain at our Christmas party.

In 2004 I met my father. I was 38. I started a relationship with him and overcame a lifetime of resentment toward him. He died in 2007. I felt sorry for him.

What is your retirement number?

Posted by BaconVonMeatwich@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 70 comments

outhere@reddit

I'll be eligible to retire in 4 years at 60. I'll get a pension worth about $1200/mo, a state retirement worth about $1100/mo and social security (at 62) worth about $750/mo. All of that is about enough to pay the mortgage and taxes. I'm going to retire anyway. I've worked all of my life, have a college degree, and several state licenses. I guess I can get a part time job at the convenience store, or maybe sell a kidney or something, but I'm through with the grind. I'd rather die poor and free than slave away until I drop dead.

So, it's Independence Day. What are my Gen X folks doing tonight?

Anyone have good stories or memories from the 1976 Bicentennial?

I remember scraping together loose nickles and pennies and racing down to the bank to exchange them for a bicentennial quarter.

I'm just wonder what they think an assistant manager does. If a manager works without any assistants then finally hires an assistant, what do you think their job would be?

The workhorse generation

Most of my staff is under 30. I just opened 2 assistant manager positions to help me. None of my current staff applied. They said the reason they don't want the job was they all were afraid they would have to do what I do every day for less pay than I me.

My dad (Gen X) and I met Lee Majors. Thought you'd guys appreciate it.

My parents divorced when I was 2 years old. My mom always said my dad was a very bad guy. I met him when I was 32. He wasn't so bad. I have 4 kids. 1 of them tells people I am abusive. The other 3 disagree.

Anyone else grow up with regional food you can't get anywhere else?

I say "west" Texas because if I said "panhandle" no one would take me seriously. Also, true frito pie is a snack-size bag of fritoes with a slit cut in the side for pouring in the fixins.

We all went into the fields at around 11 or 12 where I lived in Texas. Same as most gen-x'ers most southern states. That "child labor" stuff doesn't apply to farm labor. My work history is not uncommon in my neck of the woods. Most folks I know around my age started working full time in the early teen years. You might have had a more privileged upbringing than country folks. We're used to that too.

Yes. I was working the cotton fields when I was 11. Flipping burgers by 14. When I was 10 I was mowing lawns, but I didn't count that.
