What do you do with your evenings after work?

I have kids so getting to choose what's on the TV after they go to bed feels like a real treat. I like to crochet while I watch, it's mindful and creative but doesn't drain what little energy I have left.

What’s something from childhood that just felt posh but probably wasn’t?

People who sat in a box at the theatre. It wasn't until I was old enough to buy theatre tickets myself that I realised they were often cheaper because the view of the stage was so bad.

What knock offs at Aldi and Lidl are as good as, if not better than the ‘originals’ ?

What does everyone think about ignoring charity workers and other solicitors when wearing headphones in public when they try to get your attention?

Posted by StuChenko@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 897 comments

mootrun@reddit

I used to feel bad for ignoring them but now that I'm wrangling a baby in a pram and a boisterous toddler and they are STILL trying to stop me for a "quick chat" I have absolutely no shame in saying "obviously I don't have time for this" and storming past.

What are appropriate school trips for GCSE age (14-16) kids?

Any Roman sites will be useful for Latin e.g. Bath or Caerleon. I went to Caerleon when I was doing GCSE Latin and really enjoyed trying to figure out all the inscriptions.

How long ago would you describe something as happening "the other day"?

Posted by Luxury_Dressingown@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 124 comments

My 3 year old says "earlier"to refer to sounding that happened at pretty much any time (including before he was born) so yeah for me "the other day" could be ancient history.

How can I stop my 16 year old son vaping?

It's funny you say that because we all quit long ago (me, my sister, both parents) but she went to visit family on the weekend and was smoking with her cousin's kids 😂

This is exactly how my mum put me off smoking. She made it seem incredibly uncool by getting all excited about going for a smoke with me.

I quit vaping 4 years ago and I still have the occasional panic that I don't know where my vape is. I was so dependent on it it was a bit scary.

How are you spending New Year’s Eve?

So far, dealing with a million tantrums from my 3 year old while breastfeeding my 7 week old, all on about 4 hours sleep. I might see midnight while I'm feeding the baby later.

Be honest - have you had a good 2024?

This time last year I felt stuck in a job I'd fallen out of love with and feeling sad and tired months into trying to conceive our second child. But in February I got a new job and last month we welcomed our new baby girl. So 2024 beat 2023 for me!

Gosh I remember 6 - 9 months with my first being the worst for sleep. I wish I had advice for you but I think I just went a bit insane. That's why even though my sleep is broken now I appreciate how much worse it could be 😂 Good luck, all I can say is it did get better eventually!

Would you admit you don’t really like Christmas?

mootrun@reddit

Stop buying the presents. Next year let people know that you're not doing presents this year. They will probably be relieved that they won't have to buy you something you probably don't want and that you're not going to give them something they don't want. I love Christmas but I don't do a lot of gift giving (other than for my kids and nieces/nephews who I genuinely enjoy buying for). I make time for friends I don't see often enough, take walks around the town to enjoy the lights, and eat a ton of food that only appears in shops at Christmas time. Take the bits of the season you enjoy and dump the bits you don't. Even if it's just Florentines.

How many people in the UK are regretting their career choices?

I was in your position when I was 29. I did a degree apprenticeship with the civil service and now really love my job and have lots of career prospects. Have a look into degree apprenticeships - often they are fully funded degrees and you can get quite good pay depending on what you are training in and with whom. Software development, data and cyber are all good options.

My three year old saw the elf in a shop and asked what it was. I didn't want to make life hard for myself so I said he hides around the house at Christmas, thinking if I just move him around throughout the month that will be fun but not a lot of work. Well he thought I meant he would have to hide him and has been doing so for the last week. Not sure how long it will last but I feel like we've won.

In your opinion, what is the best city to visit at Christmas time for that proper Christmas feel?

I went to Vienna one December and have never seen so many Christmas markets. Every market I went to someone would say "If you think this market is good you should check out the one over there!". It was great fun. We went to Graz too and it was a similar story, lovely markets and great entertainment.

Who was the unlikely hero in your life?

Posted by TreCoy@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 63 comments

mootrun@reddit

When I was at university I bailed on a night out around midnight and decided to grab some chips and cycle home. I was dressed as Smurfette but for some reason also had a Papa Smurf beard. I was not in a fit state to cycle. As I was trying (and failing) to climb onto my bike while balancing a box of chips on one hand, I was approached by Braveheart. Braveheart had broken away from a gang of Bravehearts who were also buying chips. Braveheart was very concerned about what might happen to me if I attempted to cycle home alone. Braveheart took my bike and walked me around 30 minutes to my door, waited to make sure I could get into the house, locked my bike to my railing and left, never to be seen again. It was all very silly at the time but looking back I sometimes think about what could have happened to me if he'd left me to my own devices that night. Not all heroes wear capes, some wear blue face paint.

I knew nothing until I got on the bus at the end of the school day and the driver said "have you heard what happened in America? Two planes crashed into buildings". Couldn't have downplayed it more if he'd tried. I got home and my mum was on her knees in front of the television crying.

Also when you have a bad infection. I turned up at A&E vomiting and cycled through falling asleep, laughing hysterically and hallucinating before they fixed me up (giving me gas and air which naturally led to more hysterical laughter until they wrestled it off me again).

Do you pick wild blackberries? If not, why not?

Posted by not-much@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 256 comments

mootrun@reddit

Yes I do, my toddler is obsessed and there are brambles everywhere where we live. It does seem like I'm the only one sometimes though. I walk my toddler to nursery and back two days a week and I swear we are getting dibs on all the best blackberries and getting them just as they ripen. There are more brambles in the lane behind my house but none of my neighbours seem to notice or care. I fill up a couple of tubs each year to freeze and use for my first winter crumble.

Vapers. Do you feel it’s acceptable to do it anywhere or am I generally just coming across rude people ?

Posted by tinkerbelle1981@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 491 comments

mootrun@reddit

What worked for me was gradually reducing nicotine content to 0 over a few weeks so that the nicotine dependency was gone, and then quitting the vape cold turkey. The habit was MUCH harder to kick than the nicotine. I chewed a lot of gum and played with fidget toys and playdoh. I also just got really mad a lot. If you know other vapers, avoid them for a couple of weeks (my husband, who has since also quit, kindly agreed not to vape in front of me).

mootrun@reddit

This was absolutely me when I vaped, and I was never like that with cigarettes. Quitting vaping was the best thing I ever did. It took months for the "where's my vape?!?!!!" panic to subside and realising how dependent I'd become was what motivated me to never pick them up again.

Do you do a 4 Day Working Week?

Posted by dylbagsjones@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 335 comments

mootrun@reddit

When I returned to work from maternity leave I reduced my hours by 10% and increased my working day by an hour so that I could work four days a week. My husband did the same. We both love it, we get a day a week hanging out with my son and getting stuff done around the house while he's napping, and we barely notice the extra hour on the days we do work. Losing the 10% salary each took a bit of getting used to but we think it's worth it for the time we gain with our son. I would find fully compressed hours (9-10 hours a day) very difficult especially around childcare. Even when my son goes to school we're going to keep the arrangement, I couldn't imagine working 5 days a week now.

Does anybody actually feel like they are ‘living’ anymore rather than just ‘getting by’?

Posted by Blartdraws@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 235 comments

mootrun@reddit

I'm living! I have a 2 year old and expecting my second, my husband and I have lots of shared interests so while we don't have a lot of time for social life and hobbies we make the most of it and of our time together. We also really enjoy the toddler stuff - farms, zoos and museums make for really fun weekends.

When did you personally stop worrying about money in the UK?

Posted by PM_M3_A11things@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 832 comments

mootrun@reddit

When we (my husband and I) sold our business and joined the civil service. For us it's not about how much we make but how reliable our income is. Now we know how much we're bringing home each month, our jobs are reasonably secure and there are lots of opportunities to progress (we've each been promoted twice since joining four years ago). We live within our means and put money aside every month. Expecting our second child but not worried at all as we've got a good buffer.

How much (on average/roughly) booze do you drink per week?

Posted by cactusdan94@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1221 comments

mootrun@reddit

I have one pint a week at my local on Friday after work (we take our toddler with us so it's only ever 1 and then home to make tea). Every now and then I get a hankering for some wine, I probably buy a bottle every six weeks or so and drink it over 3-4 days. I used to drink a lot more but abstaining for pregnancy really helped me to break the habit.

I worked in a pub when I was 19. Someone was taking money from the till (turned out to be one of the supervisors), management panicked and declared that none of us were allowed to eat or drink in the pub any more, even when we weren't on shift. Like I couldn't come in on my day off and buy a pint, or get my friends to meet me there for drinks at the end of my shift. Pretty much the entire staff left within the fortnight.

A different kind of oversharing and inappropriate in a different sense. I was in urgent care with a breast abscess, all alone because of COVID and because my husband was taking care of our 6 week old. The person next to me asked what I was in for and when I told her mastitis she replied "Oh the animals on my farm get that, cows are usually ok but when a sheep gets it she's a goner".
