Dislocated my knee walking up the stairs in my house. Took three steps and collapsed in total agony and couldn’t move for a few minutes. Had no clue what I’d actually done. Also went to my GP because the end of a cotton bud got stuck in my ear. Yes it happens.

Would you get stressed about British workplace etiquette? And how do you develop the skills?

Posted by JasonMantou@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 131 comments

chasingkaty@reddit

It depends on the situation. Most of the time it’s easy breezy and I don’t give it any thought. But when there are difficult conversations to be had then it’s obviously more stressful and I give thought to how best to get my point over without it just being a session to rag on someone.

During lockdown I would wear high heels just to chill in the house. I wanted to wear nice shoes occasionally, dammit!! Why don’t you arrange a night out with your partner or friends? I bet some of them are feeling the same.

It’s good for you to be up and out post-surgery, for mental and physical health. A couple of quiet pints with some mates would be fine, a three-day bender probably not. But please be careful about mixing the booze with any strong pain meds you get given.

I mean, she’s 11 and presumably going to high school after the summer/next year, it’s probably worth a conversation about swearing. But then I told my dad to fuck off when I was 3 (didn’t know what it meant, just aped something I heard) so I’m maybe not the best person to give advice. (I’ll add that once I was older, my mum had a rule where I was only allowed to use a word if I knew what it meant. So if I said a swear word, she was ask what it meant. If I couldn’t answer she reiterated I wasn’t allowed to use it. Worked pretty well.)

I'm going to have a meeting with my boss to negotiate longer hours Mon-Thu for an early finish Fri, with no real reason other than I want to. Do you think I'd need to present a valid reason?

Posted by PaddedValls@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 103 comments

chasingkaty@reddit

I did this but got the whole of a Monday off, so basically three day weekends every week. You don’t need to give them a reason, you just need to prove that you’ve thought it through and show how the change will have no impact on the business. For me that meant showing how the work requests came in throughout the week, what the deadlines were each week and both showed minimal impact. Also agree to do a trial for a couple of months first and agree if there are any issues with it you’ll revert back. Chances are there won’t be and it’ll stay the new way, but making the suggestion shows that you are willing to meet them halfway.

So with the Euromillions still sitting at over £200million, the question is not what would you do with it but more how much of it would you give away or donate?

Posted by windmillguy123@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1055 comments

chasingkaty@reddit

So I’ve been thinking about this and I reckon I’d establish a charitable trust with £100m of it, which would fund ongoing and legacy giving. It would be properly set up with a good board of trustees etc. Then the rest would set up me and all my loved ones for life, as well as fund any one off donations to charities and good causes I personally want to support.

If you won the Euromillions jackpot, do you think you'd manage to stay anonymous?

I work in the media so my colleagues would probably sniff it out super fast due to me quitting and what I spend changing. Even if I booted them all off my social media etc, that alone would signal something. Plus my family have big mouths. 😂

What can I do about a homeless person who sits on my doorstep every day?

Posted by One-Beat8676@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 199 comments

chasingkaty@reddit

Have you had a conversation with her? Like “hey homeless lady, I get you need somewhere to sit but you need to keep your shit out of the way so it’s not blocking the steps. I’m trying to be cool here but if I trip on your bag and break my neck the next guy might kick you off the stairs”. If she’s smart she’ll realise that it’s better to stay in your good graces. It doesn’t get rid of her entirely but it would at least make it less hazardous for you.

Does Madelaine McCann deserve so much public money over the so many other children who have been lost?

She doesn’t. If the money spent on her was instead used to fund a team trying to find missing kids from across the UK it would be far better spent and probably have yielded better results.

What’s an embarrassing work tantrum you’ve witnessed?

I have two, but one I heard and the other one I saw. Both were the same woman. First: I worked in an office in a different town from the main office but I regularly had to call the main office to speak to the team. I was on one such call when in the background I heard what I could only describe as a banshee shrieking and a thud. The guy I was speaking to whispered “got to go” and hung up the phone. What happened was, one woman in the office (A) hated one of the guys (B) - long story going back years but it basically hit the point where they couldn’t even communicate politely, they just ignored each other. Until A got it in her head that B was going after her (he wasn’t, it was in her head). So on this day she lost her shit at some perceived slight and started yelling across the office at him. Then she picked up her keyboard and tried to throw it at him BUT it was in the times before wireless keyboards so it didn’t go anywhere. So she grabbed the next thing on her desk, a dictionary and launched that at him. It hit the wall next to his head (that was the thud). She was screaming and yelling the whole time. Second: A once again was upset at B. I worked in the main office by this point. A was dealing with something work related (can’t specify, annoying but privacy). B was on a call to a VIP and mentioned the work related thing A was dealing with (not overstepping just talking about it as it was a point of interest that day). A overhears and while B is on the call with the VIP stomps over and starts screaming at him about how she was dealing with it and how dare he. I sat between where A and B were so I was caught literally in the middle. B, to his credit, politely ended the call with the VIP, put the phone down and lost his shit at the boss telling her she needed to do something about A, blah blah. A never got fired, she got time off for mental health and a few years later took voluntary redundancy. B retired around a similar time. A never apologised to any of us. The keyboard survived.

Can you ask a shop to not sell alcohol to someone who is an alcoholic?

Posted by louthinator@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 84 comments

chasingkaty@reddit

Recovering alcoholic here - she will just find other ways to get it. You cannot stop an alkie who wants a drink. You can ask shops and pubs to not serve her but they don’t have to, and honestly most of them won’t want to deal with her kicking off at them when she is denied. I worked in a pub where this old boy’s adult children came in and asked that we limited him to two half pints and one nip of whisky any time he came in. We obliged but as soon as he asked for a drink beyond that he would verbally abuse us and even reduced a couple of barmaids to tears with his nastiness. Honestly, not worth it. I called him a “evil old cunt” and refused to serve him after that. The others kept doing it though.

I had surgery during Covid times so it was a bit different because the person collecting me couldn’t come into the hospital but I was only taken to the entrance when they had called to say they were waiting. I was escorted the whole way so they could see someone actually was there.

When did the UK workplace become so puritan regarding alcohol?

Posted by Careful-Swimmer-2658@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 816 comments

We recently had a new drug and alcohol policy brought in at work and it’s far more all-encompassing than any previous rules around it. I think workplaces are doing more to avoid potential legal actions being taken against them so are getting a lot more strict.

How often do people lie about domestic abuse?

Posted by Known-Load7301@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 3 comments

chasingkaty@reddit

The problem with domestic abuse is that quite often there aren’t witnesses and/or physical evidence that would strengthen a legal case for the PF. Therefore they fall into the “evidential difficulties” category. It doesn’t make them not true, just not provable. And the PF has so many cases of all types they have to deal with that they are going to focus on taking forward the ones that are much stronger and therefore winnable.
