to REALLY get good at something, imho, you have to enjoy it. if you don't, it's more like a chore or a bad job. if you have a real PASSION for something, you will NATURALLY experiment and learn. however, if you just want to level up quick, having done this kind of work for a long time, learn the basics of networks, actually understand what a subnet mask and gateway ARE and what the DO, and why. then do some basic firewall stuff. experiment with your home network and devices. learn a little about the web, make a few web pages and learn how to get a website online and working. install linux a few times and understand the 'parts' of an operating system. play around with hard drives and partitions. learn and setup RAID a few times. you have to PLAY to learn. you have to setup new things. learn to code batch files and learn about the common file extentions. learn about file permissions and attributes (chmod and chown in linux). learn all the common ways to connect to servers (rdp, ssh, ftp) and learn about windows file sharing and share permissions. hate bill gates. :)
