Tbh I do wish we would just put lights up all winter. That stretch from January to February in particular after all the lights come down is bleak. So I have no beef with people putting them up in November. I put tinsel up at the end of November once at uni to cheer the place up and my housemate at the time literally ripped them all down and broke them while I was at the library. Dickhead.

What are your thoughts on childhood sweethearts?

VioletsSoul@reddit

Yeah this seems to be the factor that has helped a lot of the childhood sweetheart couples I know is that they did still have a period of at least living separately to their partner and figuring out hobbies and living without their partner. And obviously that does break up a lot of couples but if you get through that and you're still together things are pretty solid. Which is a sharp contrast to a girl I knew who was a serial monogamist and seemed utterly incapable of existing without a boyfriend.

Honestly all the childhood sweethearts I know are normal folks. I just find their situation utterly baffling and unrelatable and I just don't really understand not knowing what being single is like. I'm not saying my single years were always a breeze but I value that time in my life immensely. If I had a time machine and miraculously found someone I actually wanted to date in my teens I wouldn't do it. So like. Happy for the folks who made it work. I just can't relate to them at all.

I miss when they did strawberry and kiwi squash. Let's pester Robinsons, I'll back you up. I want fun squash flavours back. Peach is nice though. I like peach. Does your supermarket have pear squash? That's also nice. Or get yourself a Dutch friend, they have some lovely squash flavours.

My mum was half a Yorkshire lass and she used to give us Yorkshire puddings with chicken or turkey. Although we never really did beef or pork, so my only knowledge of either was really sad beef from a carvery or school dinners (and frankly I think calling it beef was a stretch). Fuck tradition. It's a perfect vessel for holding gravy. I eat the crusts of my cornish pasties too. They're delicious. Some rules were made to be broken.

Arguably yes, because I don't believe I was talking at that point at work. But I'd already done it on Sunday. At a certain point I've found it all more performative than actually useful. There are people dying right now in Congo and Palestine and Ukraine. It feels more dishonorable to the memories of those who died in the first and second world wars at this point not to turn my focus to the atrocities happening in the present. I do wish we would do a silence for the people who died during the pandemic though. It was an immensely traumatic time for a lot of people and we largely brush it under the carpet these days.

This is what I do too. I love it when they're watching a show I watch. I don't usually close my front curtains because it's just my office so all I'm doing is working or reading usually.

Depends on the context. If I telling a story it would be skel-e--tul because I think that sounds more eerie. If it was a medical context, whatever I'm feeling that day. But in fairness I am a mongrel with accent influences from all over Britain and so nothing I do is consistent really.

Dehumidifiers are fairly expensive as an up front cost, so give her solutions, not just a problem to solve because then she's going to feel embarrassed and helpless. We're coming up to black friday so there might be some good deals on dehumidifiers, or her landlord might be able to lend her one until she can save up for one if she's renting. Mine did, which was a lifesaver because I could not afford £100 on a dehumidifier at the time, and my dad managed to gift me one with the air miles he got from having to travel a lot for work. Or offer to give her a hand with taking them to the laundrette so she can use the tumble dryer there. It's a delicate and embarrassing area so do not go in with 'you are not drying them properly' because that is just going to compound the shame factor. Just be like hey there is no easy way to say this and I'm saying it out of love, but I've noticed your clothes smell kind of damp and I know how hard it is to get clothes dry in a flat, you could try asking your landlord for a dehumidifier or I can send you a link to some cheaper dehumidifiers if you want. She probably has noticed but can't do much about it and just prays nobody else will bring it up.

17 for uni, came back in the holidays but I never moved back properly, I put my stuff in storage the first two summers and stayed in my uni town to work for the rest of my degree until I got my full time job. I had a great relationship with my parents but I do think that is partially because they gave me the freedom to figure myself out as an adult without them.

Really recommend, place I went was like £25 or something, and we saw two beavers! They were explaining what an impact it's had on the biodiversity nearby and the increase in insects has led to 12 different bat species being sighted around the area as well as willow tits and pole cats, which I didn't even realise existed in the UK.

Electric buses, hydrogen buses, an increase in sustainable energy sources, and also in Newcastle they've developed the means to do IVF using a donor for the mitochondria in eggs so if you know there is a risk of mitochondrial disease, someone can donate their eggs, they will just use the mitochondria, insert that into a fertilised egg, and then implant that egg so far a few children have been born using this method and none have shown signs of mitochondrial disease. Which is a huge deal because mitochondrial diseases can be horrible and seriously impact both duration and quality of life.

I mean a lot of people do not truly know their sexuality at 12, but this includes a lot of straight people. When I was 12 I was under the impression I was straight, because I liked boys. Evidence later in life proved otherwise. I always think it's important for everyone to know that they do not have to hold on to a label that no longer serves them or describes who they are for fear of what others may say about it, but that's not the same as treating it as a phase that will definitely change. I think you did right in advising him that as long as he's happy that's important, but just let him lead as he figures out who he is. It's so hard to figure out who you are at the best of times, even more so when you're not straight.

Thank you! I'm sorry about your dad, and your mum being awful. You sound like you're doing a great job supporting your kids though. And yeah, would recommend life insurance if that's an avenue available to you. Although I suppose it depends on how easy it is to get hold of. My dad said it was the easiest thing to sort for my mum, the hardest was just her regular current account.
