Are americans obsessed with ice?

Posted by Kallzeras@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 304 comments

ViewtifulGene@reddit

Ice in drinks kicks ass. It makes them colder. If you don't want ice to melt, you can add MORE ice and it will melt slower. Ice melts when it reaches the same temperature as the drink. When you have more ice, it stays colder for longer.

People who put they don’t speak English at home on the ACS, does that automatically mean you are more fluent in that language than in English?

Posted by wiz28ultra@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 60 comments

ViewtifulGene@reddit

Impossible to determine from the American Community Survey question. They ask about English fluency, but not about fluency in other languages. It wouldn't be fair to say they're better in another language. There are multigenerational households where they might speak a different language because of the grandparent.

Why the hatred against the "broccoli haircut"?

ViewtifulGene@reddit

I don't personally know anyone with the cut. I don't hate people with it as a category. But the examples I am familiar with are insufferable. I have a buzzcut and am trying to reclaim it from divorced dads with bong-rip-conspiracy-theory podcasts.

How often do you have fish for breakfast?

Posted by VisionsOnly@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 1864 comments

ViewtifulGene@reddit

I'll have a bagel with salmon and cream cheese for breakfast once in a blue moon. I rarely crave it. I prefer bacon and eggs as my breakfast protein. I'm an atheist now, but I still don't eat meat on Fridays during Lent. I know it's bullshit, it's just a cultural holdover.

Posted by Jay35770806@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 377 comments

ViewtifulGene@reddit

Unless you're doing business in a language that the other party doesn't understand, no. It's nobody else's business if your table at a restaurant is speaking Spanish, German, Arabic, Mandarin, Dwarvish, Geonosian, Al-Bhed, etc.

Wolf spiders are chill. There was one in my bathroom while renting a cabin once, and he didn't move at all from the sink for a few hours until I finally scooped him in a cup and let him out.

Do you guys get a lot of big spiders in your homes?

Posted by ashley-jay-vids@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 607 comments

ViewtifulGene@reddit

In my house, I've never seen any spiders bigger than a daddy long legs. One time I saw a yellow garden spider set up a web right outside my garage, but she never went in. Most spiders are friends. They keep to themselves and eat things that actually bother people.

Are American carmakers still valued in the US?

Posted by Andrew_Italia4668@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 492 comments

ViewtifulGene@reddit

At a state or local policy level, I don't think there's a strong preference for foreign vs domestic carmakers. Usually, automotive manufacturing is prized because it's high pay and creates lots of exports. I don't think any economic development agency is turning up their nose at Hyundai or Nissan because they want Ford. There is a lot of interest in domestic electrical vehicle manufacturers with less baggage than Tesla. Rivian, for example.
