Who can afford to smoke anymore?

I gave up for 15 years, missed it every day. Until, not long ago, I was going through a hard time and gave in and got some cigs. They were vile. Not the nice, smooth, delicious flavour I remembered. More like trying to suck the exhaust fumes of a ford capri! I’ve not been tempted since.

What’s a polite way to end a conversation when the other person clearly does not want to stop talking?

Posted by MistressLolaDiamond@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 227 comments

SufficientRead1@reddit

My manager in my last job was like this. After trying all the polite ways I had to resort to walking away whilst saying “I’m walking away now, I have left the room and can’t hear you anymore” loudly! He’d unfortunately keep talking at me until I’d left the building and possibly after 🤣

Why is my house so cold?

Posted by Square-Revenue-6502@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 106 comments

SufficientRead1@reddit

I have underfloor heating and have found it doesn’t work well if you just keep the temp set. The heating doesn’t stay on long enough to heat the floor properly. The best way, is to let the house get cold during the night and then turn the heating on in the morning until it raises 1-2 degrees. This gets the floor good and warm and will last all day.

How do you keep warm in old UK flats with single-glazed windows?

Posted by cxvgwesa@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 292 comments

SufficientRead1@reddit

We live in a converted chapel that has the same problem. We have custom cut glass panels to act as secondary glazing and wooden blind in front of them. They weren’t cheap but are well worth it. You save a fortune in heating and stay warm. https://preview.redd.it/b9lsn2z0cd2g1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=679bd79584ecc8bb0752e7421f382ecd843816a7

Well that sounds far too much like common sense! I was quite young when we did this so am not sure why they didn’t think to cut the meat off. I do remember how good those sandwiches were though.

Free school meals should they be smaller portions?

Posted by misspixal4688@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 618 comments

SufficientRead1@reddit

No! That is just wrong. In the school I work in the free school meal kids get the price of a main meal and dessert, what they choose to spend it on is up to them. The portions are the same and if we know the family is struggling we go out of our way to make sure these children are fed!

I was shopping in Asda not long ago, looking for peppers. Every single packet was mouldy, some were so bad they’d turned to slimy mush. I told the person working there, who just shrugged and carried on stocking shelves.

I work at a huge school, yesterday one of the parents stopped me to tell me that I was her daughters favourite dinner lady because I am always kind and smiling. It was a brilliant start to a Monday morning.

My child missed lunch 2 times this week because the school cut lunchtime to 30 minutes, what can I do??

Posted by Begum65@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 658 comments

SufficientRead1@reddit

I am a school dinner lady and this seems insane. We feed 1400 over two hours in 3 sittings, in 3 locations around the school. You definitely need to complain to the school management and if possible find other parents whose children are missing out on lunch and ask them to complain too. It is never ok for children to miss out on their lunch. Keep on at them, it is in their power to change these things if they don’t work.
