Ya I don’t plan on completely restoring everything little thing. I’m going to clean it, fix what’s absolutely necessary and sail the crap out of it. I believe in myself and the dream. Lol

I don’t have an extra 5k laying around. So it’s kinda this or just keep dreaming and doing nothing. And I priced out sails and parts. Honestly don’t think it will cost that to get her sailing. I’m actually looking forward to the process. I know it’s probably a little foolish, and I do appreciate the advice. But I think I’ll go for it and learn the hard way. I’ve been yearning for something like this. My kids will love it.

I did, and I found Facebook groups where I can buy used ones. I think I’ll be ok. Obviously going to inspect the hull and everything first. But I think she’ll look a lot better after I take it to the car wash and give it a good pressure washing.

Brand new main sail is like $600 but there’s used ones out there for a couple hundred. I really don’t think it will take 5k to get her sailing. Could be wrong, but it will be fun finding out. I’m looking forward to the tinkering almost as much as the sailing.

Ya I don’t know why everyone is saying cash sucker. It’s a whopping$150 bucks and nice ones sell for thousands. Plus I enjoy projects. My kids will love this thing if I can get it sailing. We have a lake and sailing club right down the road.

Ok thank you, that’s good info. Sails look a little pricey new, but seems like there’s facebook groups where used ones can be found. I’ll check about the mast and boom before I drive out there. Appreciate the tip.

That’s awesome. Thank you. Think I might go for it. Looks like parts are available aftermarket. Nice to hear you had a good experience. Did you have to do much work to yours?

Ok thank you. I’ll look that up right now. I mean it might need a new sail and rigging. Hopefully it has a rudder. But I think it looks like a fun little project. Fiberglass looks good and it’s not like I need to rebuild an engine. Big enough for the wife and kids to learn on at the lake.. maybe I’m crazy.

Hull looks pretty nice to me but I’m an newbie. Honestly looks like it’s just mostly surface dirt that would come off with a power wash and some light scrubbing.

Ok thank you. That’s all great advice and valuable insights. I really love both those those boats and I am seeing decent ones under 10k. I think that 27 foot size is a sweet spot for what I’m trying to do. Definitely want to avoid a loan, so those both sound like great options. I’m seeing some Alberg 30s in that range but they are a lot rougher shape. And since I’m still learning I figure 27ft would be a lot easier to learn on and cheaper to maintain. Really appreciate the advice. Thank you.

Thank you for the thoughtful response. I definitely don’t want that to be me. I really don’t want to be bogged down in repairs for years. That’s part of why I’m looking at smaller boats. Just less to go wrong and fix. I do actually look forward to doing some repairs but not at the expense of actually sailing. Trying to find stuff already in the water so I don’t have to worry about trailering or stepping a mast. There’s some promising stuff out there. I really like the cape dorys and the Bristol 27. They seem pretty well made.

Ok thank you. I’ll take that all under advisement. I’m definitely still in the education stage. Hopefully learn some lessons from other people before making my own mistakes. Right now I’m just trying to learn enough to be able to tell the difference between a good deal and foolish undertaking. I’ll definitely keep the production boats in mind.

That’s why I was thinking about the Catalina’s, 27 and 30. But if I can get a full keel for not that much more, why not? I saw a guy on YouTube find a alburg 30 for $2500, fixed it up and now he’s sailing around the world. Not saying that would be easy by any means.. or that it’s not risky. But if I’m going to put my heart my heart and soul into a boat I would like it to be safe in a storm and capable of crossing oceans. I see your point though. And will take it under consideration. Thank you for your candor. Thank you.

I actually saw that a few days ago and it’s been driving me crazy the last few days. I think that’s a great option and location. I want that boat so bad. I need to call them at least.

I thought a lot about the Catalina 27 just to learn on till I find and save for a classic but I’d definitely feel better about one of those ALBERG boats if I can find one. Has a Catalina 27 or 30 ever circumnavigated? I tried to look it up for fun but didn’t get any info.

I’m pretty handy. I used to own a farm, so plumbing, electrical, small engines etc is not new to me. I also took some classes at a sailing school in Sacramento. My grandfather also lived on a sailboat in the San Francisco Bay. So I’m not totally inexperienced. I’m fine getting my hands dirty, just want to start on a good foundation.

Ok! Thank you, I started going down that rabbit hole tonight after that other person mentioned the Pearson Triton. Looks like he has other amazing ones. That really helps narrow it down. I love the boat’s history and how proven they are and looks like there’s affordable ones out there. Looking forward to learning more about them but his boats sound like exactly what I’m looking for.

Thank you for your response. I don’t want a beater. Just looking for what brands and models are on the cheaper end or can be found cheaper, but still have heavy displacement and a full keel. I do see them occasionally, for example there’s a westsail 32 for sale for 5k online. Probably worth at least going to look at. For your car example. Say I want to road trip now, not wait till I have enough for the perfect car. Not having rent and living in my car will help me save. I can’t afford a Mercedes, BMW or Ferrari. I’m looking to start my trip in a well maintained Toyota Camry, A clean Honda accord, maybe a Honda minivan. What I’m wondering is what Make and Models are known for quality and capability, while at the same time can be found relatively cheaply? What is the Toyota Camry of blue water sailboats? I’ve seen some good ones listed recently, so I know they’re out there. But more knowledge of actual models to search would be helpful.

I’m in Oklahoma. But my remote job will let me move anywhere in the USA. Would prefer to find something in Florida or in the Gulf of Mexico. Because I plan on living aboard there, while I practice, refit, and upgrade the boat while I’m saving for longer passages. Would like to sail the coast down to South America before actually crossing an ocean.
