Thankfully the internal teams have worked very hard with our certficte tool and we pulled the trigger for 30 day certs even for internal apps about 2 months ago now. Automating all the apps we use was the worst part, but internal app that could not be automated was dropped from support. They pull from the internal CA. Exertnals are primarily lets encrypt so that was the easy part to automate as its web apps mostly hosted on our metal.

Why does everything need to run through a purchasing partner?

SCETheFuzz@reddit

Because at the end of the day they want a layer of separation between the end buyer and manufacturer.  Call it a value add, call it a scapegoat their are reasons for it in the industry. They might not be good ones, but they are reasons.

What’s the going hourly rate for a Jr. Technical Support / Help Desk role in California?

Currently I feel a lot of people are looking for a place to keep the chair warm. Nothing wrong with that if the tasks are getting done. I dont need everyone claiming to be the best or fighting for the top spot. But I do see it

Im all for giving guys a fare shake at the money tree but you got to earn some of it. We do pay boosts for certs (.25 for your az900 up to 2k for ccna), and oncall gets a "call out fee" of 150 for just having the phone with you for the week even if you dont take a single call. ( phone must be on, charged and not in airplane mode 😅)

If you want something cheaper than fluke we use this. https://www.amazon.com/NETSCOUT-LSPRNTR-300-LinkSprinter-Distance-Indication/dp/B00UD6G2OY/ref=asc_df_B00UD6G2OY?mcid=84c7eaf87d7f3acbab04964c25ec0884&hvocijid=2264616615683855611-B00UD6G2OY-&hvexpln=73&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=721245378154&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2264616615683855611&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033787&hvtargid=pla-2281435177898&psc=1 Link sprinter is cool and logs the info in their portal for you. Idk if its worth doing a building this way but its better than some other methods.

Access Control Systems

As a construction company, odds are you know a smaller Low voltage/security company from a project might be worth asking them. If you're going to do a self-install get one that supports end users without a partner in the middle. I would say because you are small a little cloud system would be worth a check ( Avigalon Alta, Brivo, Verkada, Ubiquiti ). All of these for the most part use in-house boards so keep in mind switching between brands will cost money. It's not until you get to their bigger products that they look at using a more standard panel.

$15k extra left in budget. What do I buy?

What's the deal with Ava cloud connector?

Posted by Main-Importance3891@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 3 comments

SCETheFuzz@reddit

1. Yes 2. Maybe, Motorola wants a unified platform meaning they don't want to lock you into just Ava cameras as they also own Avigilon ( IMO the better product). In the long term, I see them continuing support for onvif. 3. Going to depending on the camera has been my experience. Most can do basic analytics however I think you need to use one of their cameras for the fancy stuff like queue counting/wait times.

How often do you pentest? How much does it cost?

Do any of your facilities use biometric technology?

Posted by Bubba8291@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 14 comments

SCETheFuzz@reddit

Go rent floor space with most major data centers and you will find most require some kind of biometrics to access data halls as a form of 2fa. I've used everything from iris, fingerprint, facial, vain, and the worst hand geometry. Even local airports require the guy flipping burgers to use fingerprints to go through doors. The who's watching the watchers is what you should be thinking. Most vendors of theses applications are security integrators (not cycber, but physical) and depending on the tech you get he may have access to all the hash data, thats mostly unusable to anyone but the app. The up side is he can't figure out how to set a static ip on his laptop and bearly connected to the public wifi.

How many extra switch ports do you like to budget for?

25% , we are also ok if they fill 4 of the 5 switches and we just have the 5th one plugged in and stacked with nothing plugged in to the patch panel.

OnCall Pay

Posted by GgSgt@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 135 comments

SCETheFuzz@reddit

Were all salery, but we ended up getting was a on call base ( 200$ a week ) + ( what your hourly rate would be ). We also outlined expectations of on call. Any down system tickets submitted after 5pm - 4am , returning a voice mail/ phone call within 30 mins. Along with being logged into the VPN within an hour of receiving the call. Best week I only made 200$ Worst week I worked 30 hours after hours. Were a team of 12, and it's really not that bad, the guys that complained when we switched were the ones that did not answer when their systems broke anyways.

New build, deployed 1326 Cisco ap's and 80 catalyst 9500s that I was aware of clearly had some other gear deployed for routing. Only to switch to ruckus networks 2 years later. Reason was the new build was planned 4 years prior and the 5 year tech plan was done after construction started.

The refrigerators have built in alarms for digital temps and an old mechanical-style thermometer. The issue is, if no one is in the pharmacy you never hear/see it. Took me a while to understand why we have 2 pharmacies on campus but only 1 staffed after hours. With expensive stuff in both, I was told it was rea$$on$.

23 million in experimental research drugs. Issue 1 was refrigerator went out in pharmacy. Issue 2 we were replacing wireless APs in the area the temp tracking device communicated on. Missed the alerts as Wi-Fi was down and after 2 hour window and Wi-Fi back up we got the alerts. Meds were already compromised. Pulled into change control meeting after, went over change plan, told we did everything right and that's why we have insurance on this stuff.

All depends on how your Email is set up, ideally, your blocking request internally that don't authenticate. So they have to authenticate to send emails even if it's internal to staff, not out of the ordinary at all. Is it odd you cant manage where the details are entered? a little bit in my mind.
