Just my anecdotal opinion, but I hope I'm wrong as well. I've just seen it slide away tbh. Back in perhaps 2008-2013 time I remember being in fairly good social gyms. People shared equipment, laughed and joked, spotted each other often. I just don't see it now. In fact, me and this dude shared a machine the other day and had a chuckle about the nostalgia of the very action, then went about our day. Post covid everyone was on their toes, being near other humans just wasn't seen as normal, cloths and disinfectant everywhere in the gym to drench equipment between uses. Rightly or wrongly, it doesn't promote a social atmosphere. Add in the phones, bluetooth headphones etc. Not like this stuff didn't exist before, but I do remember a time when people weren't plugged into spotify all day. The only time I saw a sense of community in the past 5 years was at a crossfit box and an olympic weightlifting club, but personally, they just didn't feel like 'my people'. Perhaps I'm getting old and miserable, but I found them insufferable at times. Starting to sound like an old man so ill stop!

Who have you known who got off with a slap on the wrist, for something very serious?

I went through a stage of being angry at it (and just about everything else), but I learnt to just let things go. Like I mentioned before I was a pretty physical kid, and whilst it kept me on my toes for a while, I wasn't really that messed up from it. I'd say the biggest problem I had (and still battle to this day), was what I perceive as injustice or racism. I've had to sit through my fair share of corporate muck at work, but I just find it really hard to sit and listen to, for example, a colleague rattling on for the whole hour of a debating 'group' about comments regarding her hair, and if it's racist or not. I know there's probably some substance to it, but when you've literally had your head between a boot & concrete, it's quite difficult to sympathise. I'm getting better though.

Are there any spots you go to regularly? Puregym & The Gym are the way to go, but only if you know the gyms have been done up in perhaps the last three years, else they are shite. 24h aspect is nice as well so you can avoid the crowds.

Is buying a Bentley worth it?

No. It'll be full of problems, and you've got to hope no one finds them when you try and flog it again. I don't think 99% of people would give a shit if you've ever owned a Bentley, especially 25 year old junk. Just an odd mentality all round for me, but I guess people are in to different things.

It was fine tbh, I was used to getting knocked about, but the lack of action from the school felt pretty rough. ….and I carried a pen knife for the month after, could have gone south.

A group of 15 year olds (about a dozen) attacked me at school in a blatant racist attack, proper kicks and punches to the head. Luckily I played a lot of rugby so I could handle it to some extent. All caught on cctv, headmaster said it would be dealt with. Absolutely nothing happened to them .

Would you want someone close to you to tell you if you're getting fat/too skinny?

Waistcoat has sucked the life out of what could be a new 'golden generation'. He might be successful compared to previous managers, but it's still a grand total of what, a Euro final loss to Italy, WC semi losses to Croatia and France?

>I think we've made life simple for ourselves by batch cooking and being organised. It's the way to go really. I don't do it much now, but it was worth turning the kitchen upside down for an hour or two every Sunday, to have 7-10 days of meals sorted.

Sick. Probably a bit pale, or tired, bags under your eyes, not your normal self. At college, I thought I heard a girl (I had a crush on) say she wasn't feeling too good, and I said 'yeah you don't look well'. Turns out she didn't say that at all. I still think about that moment and it was over 20 years ago.

I found a 'who you know' sort of thing still helps even at entry level. I got my first retail job at 16 because I was a familiar face in the shop, and knew a few blokes who worked there. I got a labouring job through family connections etc. Do you have friends or family that can get your foot in the door somewhere?

So what exactly makes someone middle class?

Posted by Small_Balls_69@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 31 comments

PhoneDownGoOutside@reddit

Too many variables and too many opinions now for a concrete definition. I was raised in a shithole, and now I consider myself more middle class, so I have a set of 'things' that I use to really work it out if I ever do think about it. The person next to me might think completely differently. I once went on a date with a woman that tried to mock me for having a degree (seemingly ignoring the fact I was in my parent's box room with three grands worth of credit card debt). It was at that point that I realised most of the ropes holding people down are pegged out by themselves.

Tell me you’re middle class without telling me you’re middle class? Do you or your family do something you thought was normal but as you’ve grown, you’ve realised it’s stereotypically middle class?

I went to a university that was considered pretty shite, but a popular choice for posh kids who didn't really succeed in the classroom. When I hear Mumford and Sons I literally see them in my mind.

My 'working class' parents can't get their head around us spending £30 a week on a cleaner. It's not like they don't have the money, but it's a weird pride thing. They say the same about getting a dishwasher. To them, it's just something that you do, clean your own dishes, clean your own house. The concept of the couple of hours it would take to clean the house being worth more than the £30 just doesn't exist to them, nor the hundreds of hours a year saved using a dishwasher (and money saved).

To have his head screwed on so well at that age is mad. I hung around in the pro circles of another popular sport in my late teens (although I wasn't good enough in the end), and a lot of those dudes acted like children throughout their entire careers. It was like the academy system actively trapped them in a kid's mindset. Some of the shit that went on 'off the pitch' was insane. He has the potential to be the best player we've ever produced if he stays in lane.

I was part of the Msn/Myspace/Bebo era, then it was Facebook, then a bit of Instagram/Snapchat. I had a point when I was about 26/27 when I realised that it was all bullshit, and got rid of the lot. It's hilarious looking back, how 'worried' I was about losing these friends, but the reality was it was just old school/college/university friends that I'd never see again anyway. Once you're shacked up for the forceable future, you don't need the ability to slide into DMs anymore.

I once got punched by some ratty chav kid in the year above in the science corridors. Fast-forward about ten years, I'm pissed on a stag somewhere in mainland Europe, and glance up at the TV to see him slotting the winner in the championship playoffs. I didn't even know he played football!
