How do you transition from just writing code to actually thinking like a software engineer?

For me it clicked when I stopped thinking about making the code work and started thinking about the person who has to read it six months from now. Future you is basically a stranger. Write like you’re explaining it to them. That shift changes everything.

Technical Interviews Reject the Wrong Engineers

Been on the other side of portfolio reviews that feel just as arbitrary. Companies would rather reject ten good people than hire one bad one. Makes sense for them. Still stings when you know you could actually do the work.

Weird AD password issue, any ideas?

The cached token issue on multi-user machines matches exactly what you're describing and the fact that Other User workaround fixes it points right at that. Sounds like something a recent update introduced. Worth checking if all affected machines share a recent patch date.

How do you control shower temperature with manual knobs?

I grew up with those and honestly you just get used to it. Hot on full then slowly add cold until it's bearable. After a few showers it becomes muscle memory. And nah I never turned it off mid-shower, just left it running. Turning it off seems like a cold shock waiting to happen.

honestly that weirdly makes me feel better lol like maybe that feeling just never fully goes away and you just get used to it also yeah leetcode seems kinda… soul draining from the outside

post secondary route as an aspiring game dev? Worried about AI

Posted by jason9games@reddit | learnprogramming | View on Reddit | 9 comments

Honestly I get the worry. I'm a designer not a dev, but I see similar panic in my field about AI replacing creatives. So far though, it's just become another tool in the toolbox. The human stuff - taste, storytelling, understanding what actually feels good to play - that's still on us. I'd say focus on fundamentals and problem solving. AI might write boilerplate code but it can't replace the weird creative thinking you bring. Plus games are so much about feel and iteration. That's hard to automate. Go for it if it makes you happy. The industry shifts but passionate people always find a way in.

Yeah this is one of those cases where seeing the actual code makes a huge difference. If it’s around the fonts and icons section, missing the font import or linking it wrong can totally break things. I’ve run into that with Google Fonts before and it looked fine until I realized the link wasn’t loading at all. Just drop your code or a snippet here, people will pick it apart pretty fast. Way easier than guessing in the dark.

Grid Aligned Movement in Pacman C++ SFML

Yeah this is exactly it. Once I split input vs actual movement it finally clicked for me too. It feels weird at first because you expect instant turns, but the tile center check makes everything look way more polished. Also makes debugging easier tbh, less chaotic movement overall

Know Python basics but can’t solve problems, how to improve

That gap is super real, I hit the same wall and it honestly felt like I forgot everything I learned. What helped me was slowing way down and treating problems almost like little design sketches. I’d literally write out what’s happening step by step before touching code, even for dumb easy ones. Also forcing myself to finish ugly solutions instead of restarting helped a lot. You kinda train your brain to push through instead of freezing. It clicks eventually, just takes more reps than expected.

Is it too ambitious to try make an app without any experience in coding for a school project?

Posted by Beautiful_Force_1483@reddit | learnprogramming | View on Reddit | 36 comments

OptimalDescription39@reddit

I don’t think it’s too ambitious, but it’s probably too big if you try to do the full vision right away. The idea itself sounds solid though. If it were me, I’d strip it down to the absolute core first, like just input ingredients and get recipes back. That alone is already a legit project. Then if you have time, layer on the extras. Also yeah, web app is way less painful to get running. Honestly the biggest trap is trying to build the cool version first and then running out of time

Why don't car owner's manuals specify all the locations where it is safe to jack up and support your car?

It seems like they want to keep most people out of the undercarriage club, assuming that if you're not a professional, you should stick to the basics and leave the detailed work to the experts. This approach can be really frustrating for those of us who want to do more than just the bare minimum.

It sounds frustrating to deal with that level of micromanagement. If you can't sway them with logic, consider focusing on how your preferred tools could enhance productivity and quality.

With the price of cars continually increasing as a percentage of income, what’s the possibility of an “open-source” car project?

Posted by anarchyusa@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 141 comments

OptimalDescription39@reddit

the idea of an open-source car is interesting but the reality is complex. most people don’t have the skills or tools to build a car from scratch, and even with open-source designs, costs could still be high due to parts and labor. plus, the automotive industry thrives on economies of scale, making it tough for smaller projects to compete.
