In my town it’s very rare to find a cat on street. In 20 years of living here I think I’ve seen maybe three walking around. So it’s encouraged to turn in a cat to the local humane society first as it’s more likely a lost cat than a stray. They will usually check for a chip and hold the cat for a certain amount of time. If the person who found the cat asks they will contact them to give them first dips to adopt if no one steps forward. There’s a fee to adopt but it includes neuter/spay and vaccines so it’s probably cheaper than getting the cat neutered/spayed yourself.

Ya in my city I’ve only ever seen two cats outside and we called the county humane society (a no kill shelter) both times. They picked up the cats. If there’s no microchip they will usually list them as lost for a couple weeks then adopt them out. I didn’t even realize outdoor cats were a thing until I was older I’ve always been taught to reach out to the humane society.

How common is it for you to get “called into work” on a weekend or evening?

Im a scientist in a publicly traded company. I have had to get called in when our machines (usually freezers/incubators) crap out. We have an alarm system and on site 24/7 maintenance but they aren’t well versed in every piece of equipment so they usually just contact the emergency contact for that machine. So I’ve had to come in to either troubleshoot it or save the samples if I can’t. Also I know it’s not corporate like you asked but my spouse is a manager in retail. He has been called in a few times when the stores alarm system goes off.

It was part of an elective course in my junior high so you were able to choose if you wanted to do it. So I did not. Probably 5% of the class did.

I went to a medium sized public university. I knew who the Chancellor was because he made the freshmen listen to him play the guitar during orientation week. He’d also join in on some campus sponsored events. He was a weird dude and was kinda the campus meme. He’d wander around campus but im pretty sure he’d sooner join in the shenanigans than stop them. Almost immediately after I graduated he was controversially fired.

How do US sports remain interesting when teams can’t make the playoffs?

Big reason why fantasy took off. You have certain players to watch even if your team is doing poorly. I’ve had plenty of friends start to root for the opposing team because they need a single player on the opposing team to do well. Takes the bite out of a loss of your usual team
