Every time you write anything, doesn't matter what you do, and you can't go back and correct it. But every single word you write or type, you will use the American version of the spelling and when you speak you will use their pronunciation of the word too.

Why do historical abuse allegations come out of the blue?

Well, you do. In some cases though (like saville) they were too good at intimidating/covering tracks etc for it to come out when they were alive. Can't threaten or intimidate smoeody when you're dead.

You will be tripping over airport restaurants to get out into London. I wouldn't bother, especially if you would need to go through passport control. Sometimes getting put can take 5 minutes, sometimes 50, some times even worse.

How would you politely let your colleague know they smell?

Posted by Caramel_Carousel@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 404 comments

MrPoletski@reddit

I dunno if it's just me, but if it was a colleague I didn't like, or had no friendliness towards, I'd inform my boss. But if it was a colleague I considered a friend, I would find a way to approach them directly. As others have said, you gotta be sensitive.

Maybe try asking questions that could lead to the reason that they have poor hygene. This will start you off with the air that you're concerned about them and care, rather than pointing the finger and going yuk which I guess is the potential inferrance of theirs you want to 100% avoid.

"What are you in for, Bob?" "I held up a cornershop, you?" "I beat the guy I found banging my now ex wife half to death, what about you, Chris" "I, er, got caught handling a salmon under suspicious circumstances" "Oh so you met my wife too eh?"

Any idea what this is?

Why are people so reluctant to phone in sick?

Posted by so1ar97@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 985 comments

MrPoletski@reddit

Sometimes being off sick for a day means that when you come back in, you have two days of work to complete in one day just because of the nature of your job. But yeah if you're not well take the day off or you'll only infect the rest of your office and cause a greater reduction in productivity than if you just stayed away.

How do I make it clear I am introducing myself with my first name, and not full name?

Posted by haisufu@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 473 comments

MrPoletski@reddit

Look, you just have an unusual sounding name that makes it sound like two names, first and last when in fact it is one single name. There are numerous ways you could emphasise that, only one way is to also state your surname. Like if your name is Gianluca, and Italian name that sounds like 'John Luca' If being called 'John' bothers you just say 'no it's (phonetically) John-Luke-ah' You won't need to do it often. People generally try to accomodate getting basics like a persons name correct even if they are total idiots.

Usually, printed on a little info poster somewhere in your room, or bathroom, that will tell you how they want their towels handled by you.

Do you skip breakfast?

Posted by Connect-Lemon5130@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 420 comments

MrPoletski@reddit

You'll have a higher metabolism. This will likely have a knock on effect on your digestion, but I couldn't really give you any details on how. Crudely, your metabolism is the rate at which energy is moving through your body. With a higher metabolism you'll make the same walk to the shops, but you'll do it quicker, the same trip upstairs to the loo, but you'll clamber up the stairs quickly instead of sheepishly plodding. It means that at any given moment, you'll just have more energy available to immediately use. That's my understanding of it anyway, IANADoctor.

Do you support things more just because they are British?

Posted by PopularBroccoli@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 404 comments

MrPoletski@reddit

I support the England football team just because they are English. But this idea that my nation is always right no matter what, and when it's wrong that's ok because it's us and we'll just carry on with no fallout from being wrong, it's ok, we're allowed to get it wrong without any consequences for our wrongness. Well it would be wrong to expect us to face the consequences of us being wrong. Fuck that nationalist bullshit.

Yeah, the prime example of there being absolutely nothing, nothing at all, that will cause proper gun control to be enacted in the USA. It's funny, because the last time the NRA decided that we should have *more* gun control was in the 60s when the black panthers turned up.

Just walk out the stall, get a spoon from the canteen and turn the sink tap on full blast, into the spoon, then use the spoon spray as a ghetto biday. Then afterwards you can waft your arse around the hand drier to finish off.
