Don't worry about what others are wearing. Dress in a manner that you wish to be treated. If you want people to think you are a relaxed, wear relaxed clothes. If you want people to think you are someone to respect, wear a suit. I have worm a suit to a baseball game. "Fitting in" is a bad choice, pick a style and rock it with confidence. My casual garb can occasionally include cuff links because I think they are awesome!

Thickheaded Thursday - June 20, 2024

I have had the worst week this week. We have an old dell server that needed a CPU replaced. The technician asked "Can I shut it down". I responded with "Sure, you can do anything you want as long as you don't touch the other servers. He unplugged the wrong server and took one of my HyperV nodes offline. Both OS drives on the server failed because of the power failure and 2 critical VM's started to BSOD when they started to come up on the other hyper v host. 1 dead host, 2 dead drives, 2 dead VM's. Week is almost over.

Keep in mind that a lot of the "bloatware" also comes with a certain level of visibility and control into your personal device. Depending on how they configure it, they can even wipe the device remotely. They might tell you they can't see anything... They are lying. "So you can't see what model of phone I'm using, what OS is on it, and if I'm currently connected?" In some cases they can see what apps you have installed and apply restrictions without consent.

Pay attention to buzz words and phrases and use them in your daily speech. We all know that it's pointless marketing but the executive team is breathing that marketing and repeating those Buzz words to other executives as "the future". Those Buzz words will affect you and your career regardless of how pointless those words are. I was there for cloud, web 3.0, and zero trust. Deal with it.

I have honestly considered a similar setup, although with some controls to prevent password theft. Users suck at choosing secure passwords. Assigned passwords are the only way to ensure high entropy and securing against brute force attacks.

I'm not going to tell you to leave, but you need better reasons to stay. I believe that it is easier to work out your differences than it is to start something new, however if you are both unhappy and you are not working together anymore then this problem will only get worse. Houses can be sold and you and your kids can be hurt or even damaged. Maybe start by learning more about this religion. Also, learn if it's the religion that's making her act this way or if she is simply being a zealot. Once you understand, maybe you can create compromises. For instance, she doesn't need to celebrate Easter to be with her family and support their religious journey so long as her family is with her and supporting her religious journey. Make it clear that tolerance and understanding is conditional on it being reciprocal. If you truly can't work together, then you need to be further apart. A house will break you if you make it the foundation of your relationship.

The Bullshit of "Passwordless"

I think my favorite part about "military grade" is that the military has trash computer systems built in the 90s. They only recently stopped using floppy disks to launch nukes. Military grade isn't aspirational.

This was a hard lesson for me. I now lean into marketing buzzwords when making proposals. Things like "Sase", "Zero Trust", "Just in time". Something I realized is that executives are aware of these buzz terms because they talk to other executives from other companies who are all bragging that they have implemented the latest in tech and then go on to repeat the marketing talking points. Executives only speak three languages. Marketing Buzz, Charts, Number go up. Implement those three things in any proposal you ever make. Extra points if you can scare them and offer a solution.

Cold callers go directly on my nope list. 'I know who you are, and what you have to sell, and if I'm ever in the market I will be sure to call your competitors. Now, could you kindly fuck off. You have a job to do, but so do I and your interrupting it."

Firstly, Brilliant Username! Labor laws differ from state to state, so you need to check your labor laws or talk to a lawyer about getting severance. Many states have worker protections that prevent them from replacing laid off workers. If you were wrongfully terminated, you might be able to take them to the cleaners. However, the h1b visa program is a federal program; so you can take this following as gospel. You don't need to prove that the h1b worker took your exact job to file a complaint with immigration and win. You only need to show that you were able to perform the job that was given to the h1b worker. The point of the visa is to fill a job that is impossible to fill using American citizens. They have to be able to prove that there was enough of a labour shortage as to make it impossible to hire American citizens. However, when they laid you off, they were effectively saying "I don't require a laborer with these skills". The fact that they laid you off anytime in the years preceding them hiring an h1b worker shows that they WERE able to find local talent, but simply didn't want to. Essentially, you only need to show that they were "replacing American jobs with foreign workers." The fact that they terminated you and then hired an h1b worker proves EXACTLY that!

Yeah, you are going to want a labour lawyer on this one. I see a big severance in your future. as well as a report of immigration fraud to immigration services against your employer. Oof... Sounds expensive.

I used to do this back when mcdicks offered free refills. I worked in a mall next to one. The wax cup slowly disintegrated. I'd buy a new cup every two weeks or so. Glory was the day when occasionally some new hire would replace the cup instead of filling the old cup.

IT Manager here, am I just being unrealistic of my expectations of IT Technicians?

MasterGlassMagic@reddit

There is a big part of the conversation missing here. It may be realistic or not depending on how much you pay. If you are paying minimum wage then it would be unrealistic to expect them to know English. If you are paying then 250k then it wouldn't be unrealistic to expect them to build out massive infrastructure to make deployment seamless and easy.
