Do you get offended if you're asked for ID in a shop?

Completely agree - I appreciate they’re trained around a specific policy, but ultimately the law says 18, so regardless if you’re looking for someone to be underage or not, inevitably, you are indirectly suggesting they may be. It’s regrettable that a lot of people got upset - I find it somewhat cognitively dissonant that a lot of it was surrounding my being honest about what crosses my mind in those moments. I can’t help that, just as the retail worker can’t help that it crosses their mind that I’m not 25.

Is it normal: Parents buying tobacco for underage child?

Posted by Ill-Conference9083@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 12 comments

MajorPopsicles@reddit

The reality is most people who pick it up do so well before they turn 18 - mixture of peer pressure and perhaps parents who smoke unfortunately normalising it. My parents never bought me them. The law changed from 16-18 shortly after I, ‘started’. They were obviously always unhappy that I did it, but dad would reluctantly let me take the odd bit of tobacco. He’s been quit for over a decade - at 30+ I’m still hooked on vapes.

What is the actual problem with the ‘Bank of Mum&Dad’?

Nothing. It’s just a way of shaming people who are born more financially fortunate than you, whilst simultaneously ignoring that it is but one privilege amongst many. Money doesn’t guarantee quality of life without other privileges, some of which are undoubtedly made more accessible by having it - others not.

I don’t expect you to explain why you feel so strongly over my random thought about a stranger, that you chose to insult me directly. We’re all individual with different experiences that explain why one thing might upset us, but have no effect on another person.

I’m sorry that my thoughts have upset you. People thinking I’m, ‘not old enough’ upsets me, whether or not you think that’s valid. I didn’t claim that my thought process was rational, or correct. Ultimately, I’m just a stranger on the internet and they were just a stranger in the shop. I was just answering the question.

> They're not going to risk their job and a hefty fine because you find the experience "jarring". At no point did I suggest they would. OP’s question was inviting people to contribute how they felt about being ID’d, so I did.

I understand all of that and have repeatedly written that: 1. I don’t blame the staff, 2. I understand they’re not trying to be rude or offensive, 3. it is completely my issue that I feel some way about it. We all think things that have the potential to offend someone. I was just being honest about what goes through my mind - it’s not a truth, just one person’s perspective in the moment.

I understand why they do it and I don’t think they’re doing anything wrong - just being honest in that my brain jumps to, “you’re not all there” when someone cannot tell that I’m not a teenager. I fully accept but finding it offensive is a, ‘me issue’/personal hang-up.

I get that it’s, ‘their job’ but honestly when you’re in your 30s there’s something quite infantilising about it. It’s, ‘Think 25’, so 1. they think you look under 25 and 2. they can’t be sure you’re over 18. The second one seems utterly inane to me and I can’t help but question their intellect at that point. Fair enough you can’t pinpoint the age, but you cannot honestly tell me that Linda at Spar is incapable of discerning an adult from a 16/17-year-old. To look, ‘younger’ is a blessing. To be told you look like a child (supposedly!) as a 30+ woman is a very jarring experience.

British South Asians - how close is takeaway stuff to your actual cuisine?

This is really interesting - thank you for sharing. I guess China is similar in that it’s huge and the cuisine varies from place to place. Growing up with a close Chinese friend, the only dish from a takeaway menu I’ve ever seen cooked in the home is sweet and sour chicken.

Do you feel that people in the UK get a bit of a thrill from taking people down a peg?

Posted by DooDiddly96@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 35 comments

MajorPopsicles@reddit

I find people can be uncomfortable with those who do well in general and of those who are confident in themselves. I’m not sure this is UK only, but I haven’t lived anywhere else so couldn’t say for sure. I’m a strong advocate of people being self-aware, recognising both flaws and strengths, but ultimately being confident and happy in who they are. I really don’t like hearing people put themselves down, even jokingly - we all have value and should act like we do! This is *not* the same as believing you’re better than anyone else, which is what the folk you’re referring to seem to confuse it with.

How much do you think you know about day to day life in the USA?

Posted by MathematicianBulky40@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 52 comments

MajorPopsicles@reddit

It’s a pretty broad subject - so many factors would influence what someone’s day-to-day life looks like in the States. Big ol’ country - some areas with shocking poverty/drug problems that you wouldn’t expect from a, ‘1st world’ nation. Then you have people who have a lake house - bet they have a wonderful life. To be honest I assume for people in a similar demographic to me, life would look much the same - work, eat, sleep, repeat.

MajorPopsicles@reddit

I’m not quite the demographic you’re asking so perhaps my perspective is moot, but having simply travelled extensively, I can’t see myself living anywhere else. It’s important to note though, that’s *just me* and all the responses here will be. I don’t say that in the sense that the UK is perfect, the greatest place to live etc. I just don’t think adjusting to a new culture, new people, new language or environment is quite as easy as we like to make out. I’ve experienced culture shock just by spending a few weeks in another European country - enough that I desperately wanted to come home. Is coming back for an extended period, rather than a perm move an option for you? It might help in your decision.

You’re not the first to experience this and it’s not a recent development, either. About 15 years ago my ex’s brother returned from having spent 4 years working in Australia. His account was eerily similar - he found the news, media, people in general just so negative in comparison. I think he even used the term, ‘doom and gloom’ for the news.

I think they look really tidy - didn’t realise there was a strong sentiment against them. People talk about future proofing and how they’ll be viewed when they are inevitably, ‘out of fashion’ but let’s be real, most of us have white uPVC and it’s not exactly an aesthetic dream. The all grey interior fad, on the other hand: it shouldn’t, as everyone’s entitled to decorate their home however they wish, but something about the lack of imagination and capacity for autonomous thinking does irk me.

Scenario: You're driving to work for a nightshift, you hit a deer but your car still runs. It seems to be just cosmetic damage. Do you head home?

I don’t expect others to behave in any way in particular, (aside the usual legal/moral stuff). I’m generally pretty oblivious to current affairs unless it pops up on social media or my partner mentions something.

What do Brits think about Singapore/Singaporeans?

Posted by delaynomoreplz@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 907 comments

Well, exactly. Purpose was to create juxtaposition against the idea that speaking a Sinitic language qualifies you as, ‘Chinese’, which was one of the arguments presented.

What do Brits think about Singapore/Singaporeans?

Posted by delaynomoreplz@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 907 comments

MajorPopsicles@reddit

I do understand. Similarly Taiwan has strong Sinitic influence which is distinct from the, ‘native’ Austronesian cultures and languages. My point was that most nations have mixed influences - ethnic and cultural. Only with the, ‘Chinese’ do we see such strong commitment to almost hive-mind assimilation. Americans speak English. We don’t call them English Americans, even though their culture and language differs strongly from that of the earlier settlers.

Posted by delaynomoreplz@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 907 comments

MajorPopsicles@reddit

I would just say that you’re Singaporean. This concept that those whose ancestral, ethnic roots are based in what’s now known as China need to refer to themselves as, ‘Chinese’, is really odd. Most Brits ethnically have roots in what is now known as Germany, or France - no one called themselves German or French.

You’re right - my SO and I both have families in hot countries and would attest the same, hence my use of, ‘either’. I was thinking parts of rural Kenya, for example, in terms of being acclimated - not sure the Maasai have AC in their houses!

MajorPopsicles@reddit

Really hard today. It affects my cognition, speech, balance and I get other weird issues because of excessive heat. We don’t have the infrastructure for these temperatures. Other nations either have acclimatised people, lots of stone and tile constructions and consistently air conditioned buildings.
