Thoughts on my sysadmin app?

I did eventually. Solution: >!First delete the duplicate “.12” IP lease (not your own, which ends in “.10”) then renew your IP address (ipconfig /renew)!<

Thoughts on my sysadmin app?

Very neat, I dig it! Feedback on a few items: - I suggest allowing players to copy and paste information when configuring settings. We will do this in the real world whenever possible. - The reset button doesn’t always reset the level properly, and it’s not clear that it does in fact reset anything. I’d maybe change the button to say “Reset” in red, and when pressed, provide a pop-up asking the user for confirmation “Reset this level?” (y/n) - Pressing the up “arrow key” doesn’t always load the previously used command. Oftentimes it loads the second last command used instead. - Level 18 is buggy, I’m stuck on it: > The whole app crashes when backspacing to edit text after auto-populating the last used command using up arrow key. I haven’t seen this on other levels yet, just 18. > I assume the Level 18 solution is to delete the duplicate IP lease “192.168.1.12”, but I made a mistake and deleted my own IP lease (192.168.1.10) at first. Now, no many how many times I reset the level, I don’t get a “solved” message after deleting the .12 entry. Perhaps I’m just missing something, but I suspect I’ve broken it lol. That said - again, super cool!! I’ll send this app to one of my junior techs.

What's the "go-to" Windows endpoint protection these days?

Huntress will plug into M365 for that same level of monitoring and reporting. You don’t have to choose between the two, Huntress is complimentary to M365.

Cisco Meraki on my network now and i pay expensive licensing fees any alternatives??? (id still use cisco products)

Posted by richbadness@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 32 comments

LFphant@reddit

Could also be other non-Meraki Cisco gear that's just out of warranty/support. Unlike Meraki, Cisco's non-cloud-managed gear won't brick itself if you stop paying for it. However, you lose access to support (TAC), software updates, and warranty repairs or replacement.

Cookie deletion Request from high level IT Managers

Sure, that’s another (arguably better) approach. I personally think training users to be self-sufficient for simple items like this is a wise time investment. I’m just answering why clearing a cache may be a problem. If that training has not yet taken place and the prevailing mentality/expectation is still “IT holds my hand for everything”, then wiping the cache for everyone would result in a Bad Time™.

I imagine clearing all cookies would result in a flood of tickets with users complaining they got "signed out of everything". With 400k endpoints, that's a lot of tickets.

How does your company handle Termination tickets?

LFphant@reddit

Pick an identity provider, and integrate absolutely everything via Single Sign On. Personally, I'm a fan of Microsoft Entra, but there are many SSO Identity Platforms available. If you go the Microsoft Entra route, you could even use [Lifecycle Workflows to automate the termination process](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/governance/tutorial-offboard-custom-workflow-portal). This can be run on-demand or even ahead of time, just enter the desired date and time to cut off access and let the system handle the rest when the time comes.

Settle an argument: chrome or edge for work usage?

Posted by bennymase@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 445 comments

Edge. A modern browser with all the functionality of Chromium under the hood that is tightly integrated with Windows and Microsoft 365 ecosystem, as others have mentioned. Microsoft loses points from me for shoving the browser down our collective throats *so fucking hard,* but that's not a problem with the product itself.

Ha, finally scrolled down far enough to find someone else mentioning this too. Hopefully OP notices and finds the suggestion helpful.

There actually may be a plausible explanation for this: is his computer configured to use Fast Startup (Hybrid Shutdown) in Windows Power Settings? I’ve seen this before where users claim to have shutdown daily but their uptime is crazy high. Upon investigation they actually have gone and clicked “Start menu -> Power -> Shutdown”, but since they’re using Fast Startup (S4 Power State) the system never does a full shutdown (S5 Power State, aka “Soft Off”). Therefore the uptime counter is never reset. Rebooting, however, will do an “real” S5 power cycle and clear that uptime counter. https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-windows-10-fast-startup https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/fast-startup-doesnt-break-power-cycle/07bd6bf8-dd24-4c77-b911-17df89c74eb3

Wow, I've had exactly the opposite experience every time I've tried to switch from an iPhone to a Pixel. Tried with the Pixel 2, then Pixel 3, then Pixel 3A - just couldn't handle the random OS slowdowns or lag spikes. iOS is just far more stable in my experience. Carplay is far from perfect, but Android Auto was even less reliable, had to reboot my phone on the regular to get Spotify working.

Is there another IT outsourcing boom happening again?

Posted by DETLions2024Champs@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 87 comments

LFphant@reddit

Depends - If you know that you enjoy programming and studying/school in general, then consider going to college. Coding pays well and is always in demand. However, if you enjoy IT work, or need money right now, then I'd go the MSP route. You could also do both: start at an MSP and study for some IT certifications and take a few free programing courses on your own time. If you enjoy studying and learning new things, then switch gears and go to college. If you find you like the IT side more, then lean into that. Win-win.

How important is an anti-BYOD policy regarding Personal Smartphones, i.e. signing into Teams or Outlook on a personal device? I understand the super-strong stance against personal workstations, but I'm looking for feedback from the community regarding smartphones specifically. Should this be an area of concern?
