Looking at this I've been lucky so far. Doc decided she wanted an MRI for me early Nov, MRI done early Dec, she discussed results with me between Xmas and New year and referred me on to the muscoskeletal dept at the hospital. They rang me a few days ago and I have an MSK triage appointment next week.

In your personal experience what’s the best plants to attract bees? my partner absolutely loves them

Most herbs. Lavender's been mentioned. Hyssop. Rosemary. Hoverflies like fennel. Anthemis. Achillea. Also ivy. Insects love it. But it does need to get big and bushy enough to flower and it's not a small or polite plant at that point.

What's the most surprising physical pain you have been in?

JustLibzingAround@reddit

I've had three bouts of this so far and the ongoing issues in my shoulder and arm do not reassure me that there'll be no others. It's the unrelenting nature of it and the way it destroyed rest. Do you have a chair that supports your head? If not, get one if you can (the IKEA poang kind of saved me tbh). And a travel pillow that keeps your head upright. That combination (+ codeine) meant I could get some sleep. Each time I was totally useless for two to three weeks with another month or two of light duties. Then six months of being careful of it. Physio, osteopath and now, as I'm heading to finish a second year without a real flare up, a gentle physio-minded yoga class are keeping me healthy.

I have an extremely embarrassing phobia that plagues me wherever I go ESPECIALLY IN THE SUMMER. How do I get over it?

Would it help to remember the wasps are little animals and they have their reasons for being the way they are? Most of the time when they fly around you, you're just in their way, a bit of moving landscape to them. They're checking out the landscape for food but that's all. You can just be calm, be the landscape. If you're near their nest they may be more hostile in which case move away calmly, without flapping at them. Then they're defending their nest and there's a logic to that too as you're a potential threat. Nests need to be removed if they're near walkways or entrances but otherwise they can mostly just be left to do their thing. Wasp stings are horrible but only mildly so unless you get lots at once or are allergic. It's like a really minor burn. It hurts a bit at the time and then throbs and aches all day. Annoying! But no worse. Wasps are important to the ecosystem - they're both pollinators and carrion eaters. They're not as cute as bees and they're little arseholes sometimes but they fill an important niche - it might help to learn a bit about them!

One I went to a little while ago I felt massively overdressed in a nice long black skirt, black top and coat. Now I go mostly black but with some grey or a soft purple. I think knee length is ok in a dress - the last one I went to I wore a knee length jersey dress with a subdued grey and black pattern. Subdued is the right vibe I think. OP I'm sorry for your loss and this kind of practical stuff can be such a burden at this time. Be kind to yourself; comfort first, aesthetic considerations come second.

Concerned parent, is this too many substitute teachers?

Teacher retention. But also expectations have changed a lot since we were kids. Marking in our books in the nineties used to be 'tick, tick, tick, tick,' with 'good' scrawled at the bottom. Now there's follow up exercises & detailed commentary. It's probably a good thing but it does take longer for sure. Also teachers are front line for spotting learning disorders, social issues, abuse etc. Again, all good and necessary but it takes time. Every year there's more.

Yep. My husband is a teacher. I've regularly said 'we can manage for a little while if you want to change careers'. He doesn't want to though. I worry about his health. He works an average 60-70 hour week in term time and the shorter holidays are more about catching up on work than holiday (I estimate 30 hours in a half term). We know lots of people who used to be teachers.

A doctor told me this morning that men are currently expected to live until 78/79 which means 39 is technically middle aged. So with that in mid, what are the new millennial mid-life crisis trends since none of us can afford a sports car?

Pressure washing is one of the true joys in life. It used to be a small part of my job and my colleague and I used to discreetly wrangle over who got to do it. Like who gets the last biscuit we were so polite but then I'd be out for an hour come back and she'd be halfway up the path going 'ah yeah it really needed doing, nearly fell on my arse earlier'.

I think something that a lot of people don't understand is how you can know the thing that's worrying you and relentlessly playing through your brain is factually untrue or impossible or at least, very unlikely. That doesn't stop it though. If I didn't know it was untrue it would be a delusion which, yes, would be even worse, but it still sucks that it's in my head.

And also, I feel like if someone is a 'hypochondriac' and has nothing physical wrong then they probably have pretty major anxiety issues and should be treated for that. Actually if someone is genuinely suffering from major health anxiety they should still be listened to on their general health because the health anxiety could well obscure real issues.

Oh that's even worse than mine! We tend to end up with more than we need by buying what we each want plus some options for sharing/for her so if anything we come away twice the size we started.

My otherwise lovely MIL does this, combined with being convinced we should just buy a mix of things and all share when we get a take away. Which things? 'Well just anything you fancy.' My approach is always everyone chooses what they want and then we get some extras to share, but that means she has to choose something and so obviously this is a ridiculous way of doing things. If she'd only choose something but no, that would be imposing on us or something. I think it's an odd kind of laziness? Like choosing is effort and so she tries to fob it off on one of us.

Smells are so helpful. I love my lush sleepy hand cream. Some of the posh perfume places do samples for not very much money and if I can afford that, having a few new things to try can be a boost. Each sample is only a tiny quantity but they can go such a long way. Also I've got a oil vaporiser that's just brilliant. (I'm not suggesting essential oils for therapeutic purposes but just because they smell nice.) Slightly regretting the single drop of patchouli I put in it earlier that's totally overwhelmed everything else so my house smells of hippy but... lesson learnt. Usually though it just gently wafts pretty smells everywhere. Often just plain lavender.

What are your experiences with rich people not understanding the financial disparity?

Posted by Spudbank17@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 599 comments

JustLibzingAround@reddit

I agree and I think there's also the fact that life has its hard times for everyone however rich you are - illness, the deaths of loved ones, fertility struggles that sort of thing. And so, genuinely, their life has been hard at times, they've suffered loss, they've struggled. What some of them fail to recognise sometimes is that everyone else is dealing with the same sort of stuff and without the cushion that being rich gives. That doesn't diminish their pain but it does mean that if they get defensive about whether they've had an easy life, it will sound a bit tone deaf to a lot of people. Like, yes Bob it was terrible that your mum got dementia and so lucky you could pay for a 24hr nurse in her own home. Mary here has to stop in on her way to her night shift to get her mum dinner and into bed. No denying Bob's pain, it's very real but it doesn't come with the side of bone deep exhaustion that Mary has. (Totally fictional people btw) I've worked with several very rich people and they were all genuinely lovely but most of them had blind spots like these.

I think there might also be the fact that some of his crimes were just SO extreme. Stuff that it's hard to imagine is real outside of horror films. And we look back knowing about the extent of his crimes and can see people then recognised he was a creep but *suspecting* someone's a creep is a different scale of things than *knowing* he's a peado necrophiliac slimeball so extreme you would be hard pressed to put him in fiction.

Is your friend getting any help with his depression? It might be worth encouraging him to look at his doctor's website and see if he can get some therapy. Do the 'look mate it's obvious you're struggling a bit' gentle honesty thing. Don't necessarily mention the smell - he probably knows on a deep down level. I've been struggling lately and contacted a local service through my doctor's and now (within a few weeks - it's been pretty quick) I'm getting a few sessions of CBT over the phone. It's not perfect but it helps. Also going through the assessment phases is irritating but gives you some kind of clarity like, huh yeah this isn't really ok is it? You sound like a good friend! He's lucky to have you.

What dodgy work practices have you seen?

Posted by Bloe_Joggs@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 61 comments

In a household chemicals packing plant the liquid line worked from an overhead tank, usually packing ammonia in bottles. Bit dodgy given if the tank failed the workers below would get showered in ammonia. Then one day we came in to find our mild-mannered supervisor absolutely furious because we were being asked to pack acid on the same line, again from an overhead tank. He absolutely refused to let anyone else work the line and did it all himself. Fortunately it all went ok, no-one died and funnily enough I never saw the product again. This was twenty odd years ago and the business is no longer in existence. And no, I don't recall what kind of acid it was except that it was fairly full on stuff - we're not talking a bit of citric acid. That place was a bit bonkers tbh.

When I was a small child I got bollocked by my terrifying great aunt for saying blimey. 'You're asking God to blind you! Do you want God to blind you, child?!' Of course she'd have never called it a bollocking either. I'm pretty sure I've used bloody throughout my life (probably not in front of her though) and was never told off by my parents and not been aware of offending anyone. It's always seemed pretty innocuous to me. Certainly my parents generation don't bat an eyelid in my family.

Why don’t we have shutters on windows in uk like they do in Europe?

Posted by Vertigo_uk123@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 177 comments

JustLibzingAround@reddit

I've known at least two old houses that had shutters on the insides of the windows. In addition to curtains I think. Both quite big old houses(*) where perhaps rooms were shut up for months at a time when there were fewer people in the house or 'the family was away'. In that case I'd think the reasons were heat retention in winter, plus security, maybe protecting the interior from sunlight.

I suspect OP is unconsciously trying to find something to distract himself - a big DIY project might be perfect for that but I'm not sure it's actually perfect for her. Totally understandable! But he needs to find something that won't make a mess and won't mean big changes in a vital part of the house. Maybe he can teach himself to bake her fave biscuits or something. Fill the freezer with home made meals. Tidy the garage. Dig out that shrub everyone hates. Teach himself miniature embroidery. Almost anything that's not a big house project.
