What career can I switch to at 42?

This reads like burn out to me because of your work environment. I wouldn’t scrap SQL. I’ve been looking for junior tech jobs as I’m burnt out working as a veterinary surgeon and so many job adverts list SQL as an essential requirement! I think you need a break if you can afford it? When was the last time you ever took a few weeks off? You need to decompress and then start looking for a new job on tech with a good supportive team. idk that’s just my 2 pence!

Should I change my legal name from Sevyn to a more “normal” name?

URGENT - My dog is missing after a burglary. How can we get him home?

Join local community groups too so you can get wider community outreach : awareness. And post every day sometimes multiple times a day so it stays in peoples memory and they will be on the look out more consciously. We need to rally people to help with the search. Also post the posters in your local supermarket and corner shops and cafes.

Another thought - do your neighbours have a ring door bell camera ? Does anyone in your street have a camera? We know the approximate time of the theft so we might be able to identify their car registration / model or the thieves themselves. Please knock on every neighbours door if you haven’t done so already!

Please inform all local vets in the area. If he’s rehomed they will scan his chip and find that he already has a home but they might try and say “he’s a rescue”. Also inform the local dog warden.  And check Gum Tree - so many pets on their are stolen.

How often do you have a sick day at work, and do you feel guilty for it?

Posted by Rydog136@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 208 comments

Jinxrocket@reddit

If I’m sick I’m not going in. I don’t feel any guilt when I know I’m replaceable. I dont “pride myself” based on the number of sick days. It always annoyed me when people judged others for taking sick days, and they’d come in sick and spread it to everyone just to “show face”, “look how hard/resilient I am”. No your skit a jobs worth Madi / Maureen / Karen / Susan.

I always have an issue in every single job, is there something wrong with me?

I’m 32F vet and I honestly feel like I could have written this- it resonates with me! You’re not alone! I just quit my latest job after only a few months because I felt all the above (anxious, overwhelmed, exhausted, struggling and making silly little mistakes like forgetting to do something such as labelling bloods (nothing serious)) tbf my boss also was unprofessional using expletives when giving feedback. He also said I hyperfocus as if it’s a negative trait? I’m having interpersonal therapy and CBT to see if that will help me .

Are you all expecting an inheritance in your lifetime?

Posted by xxxJoolsxxx@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 813 comments

Jinxrocket@reddit

I’m not expecting anything. I think it’s gross how some people just can’t wait for that cash payout from the death of a relative. Everything I have saved has come from my own hard work. I hate how this society seems to be run on inheritance. Having a good decent job in some ways means nothing anymore, my friend who doesn’t work at all, is just living on his inheritance. It just seems unfair.

I'm a teen and want to leave home. can anyone let me know if Im overreacting?

This ^^ I remember being an angry teen and never appreciating my parents. Now I look back horrified. Maybe some self reflection and gratitude will go a long way… is it really that bad?

Im having a very hard and bad time right now in my life who can I talk to?

How many of you actively exercise?

Posted by turk91@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1315 comments

Jinxrocket@reddit

I’m the same. I work x4 10 hour days. Sometimes 5 20 days in a row in a physically and mentally demanding job (a vet working in a 24 hour hospital!), on my feet all day. I try to exercise in my time off but I’m just exhausted. 😔

I was speaking to some friends from America who didn't know that school houses are actually a thing in the UK. They thought it was a made up Hogwarts thing. Mine were Neptune (blue) Mars (Red) Jupiter (yellow) and Venus (green) What were your school houses called?

Jinxrocket@reddit

Yes! For sports day and other competitions.  Howard (green), Fisher (blue), Courage (red), More (yellow) I don’t know what they actually stood for so if anyone knows 😅

Has M&S started to do nicer clothes or have I just reached that age?

I’m a 32 year old women and I love MnS- they’ve definitely upped their game recently. My fashionable 19 year old cousin Vi also shops their for some items - so it can’t be that bad! They do a good brand called Nobody’s Child which is good quality and cool 😎 the bras have also been solid over the years 😂 ok I sound like I work for them now ..!

Why do all young boys in the south speak like they are from London?

Literally describing musicians Frankie Stew and Harvey Gunn and all their followers. Grew up in Brighton, went to a decent school, from nice middle class families.. but they rap and put on this hard man council persona. 🥹

I’ve just pulled a sicky. How often do you do this?

Posted by ImASadGirlImABadGirl@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 530 comments

Jinxrocket@reddit

I’m literally doing this too (have had yesterday and today off work, despite being away for a week I just didn’t feel ready to come back..). Don’t feel bad, listen to your body. No one lay on their death bed regretting any fake sick days and extra time for SELF CARE. Mental health is just as important, if not more so, than physical health. Feel better soon. Maybe it’s a warning sign to look at less stressful corporate jobs.

Could someone explain how I was offensive today?

She sounds like a cunt with a chip on her shoulder. You didn’t say anything wrong, she just took offence and the issue is with her. Don’t give a moments more thought!

is this normal? 30 mins for lunch, working 9 to 5, 5 days a week, £23k

😂😂 thank you! Your partner has a very supportive and understanding husband! ♥️ my boyfriend has been with me throughout vet school and it’s been testing on our relationship but he now knows why I come home exhausted, stinking of BO, and sometimes not say many words all evening 😂 but he gets it now and I am lucky too :) it takes a very patient partner to date a vet 😂😅 🐾

You are bang on! Vets are held at ransom by the corporates, pharmaceutical and insurance companies. I feel embarrassed when giving estimates to clients for some procedures.

You know it 😂 hit the nail on the head.  I wish it was wider public knowledge though, especially in light of the recent CMA review. When clients say “you must be minted!”, I always bite my tongue and wish I could say “well actually I’m driving my mums rusty 12 year old fiat 500 and half my wage goes on rent and bills and I’m in 200k student debt..” 🥹 it’s totally unsurprising the vet profession has the highest rates of depression and suicide. We are empathic high achieving perfectionist sensitive animal lovers not salespersons!!! 🥲 i love my job but it is exhausting.

Veterinary too. It’s actually a “good day” if I manage to even sit down for 10 minutes to get lunch. But yeah I’m suppose to get 30 and I never leave on time, I always leave an hour late on average.

Where can I go nowadays to have a coffee for less than £4?

What type of machine? I’m thinking of doing this :) I spend like £20 a week on coffees and it’s a joke I know and I wonder why I’m struggling to save 🤣

English fry up with good British cup of tea (Teapigs brand - the great British cuppa), or a personal local favourite of mine “Chocolate digestives tea bags from Bird and Blend Co (Brighton tea specialist). And suggest watch Harry Potter series with him (it’s soo nostalgic!!) or Lord of the Rings - the shire and hobbits remind me of the south west UK. Maybe arrange a zoom call or WhatsApp video call with his family and friends? Look out for cheap flights on sky scanner so he can visit UK. I know when I was abroad I missed tea , toast , beans the most and going to a cozy pub. I hope he feels better soon!
