Bro I edit videos on Vegas and manage to use over 32gb all the time. And if you want to do any future proofing at all then 64 is the way to go if you do anything productivity. It wasn’t that long ago people said 32 was unnecessary and 16 was enough..

My build doesn't have enough USB ports. Are USB hubs really that dangerous?

Posted by VelisiumLab@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 208 comments

Wait usb hubs fry motherboards? I've been using one for 8 years on my old rig and I got a usb c one for my new one been using for 4 months. I never had an issue. I mostly just use it for flash drives or to charge my phone anyway.

Why are 3090, 3090 ti’s and 4080’s dirt cheap but 4090’s are going for full retail used?

I feel like there has be a better reason than the used market is full of stupid buyers. Are people worried about the 5090 cards burning up still?

Theories about the end of RAMageddon

Posted by Valuable-Resolve146@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 505 comments

HeroDanny@reddit

Is what it is I guess. Prices are insane. I am so fortunate I decided to build my PC back in may and I went ahead and bought more RAM than I needed. 64GB DDR5. I paid $200. The same RAM I bought is about $790 right now. On the other hand. I paid $1,100 for my 5070 Ti. But now you can find them for $850 (asus). So you win some, you lose some. If I were building a PC I would just buy the minimum amount of RAM you need right now and then be on the lookout for deals to upgrade later.

Who is even buying so much ram at these prices?

Posted by papayamagician@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 460 comments

HeroDanny@reddit

I must have bought in right before the madness happened by in June. My PC has 64 GB of RAM and I don't remember it being super expensive. I went with the 9950x, how do you like the x3d? I was turned away from it because of that core parking issue people complained about with the 7950x3d.

If anything over 32GB of RAM is overkill for 99% of users, than who's the remaining 1%?

HeroDanny@reddit

I video edit, my old rig had 32 and there was a few times I checked resource monitor and was closing in on 30gb being used. My new rig has 64gb, that should hold me for another 8-10 years hopefully. Ram is cheap in comparison to GPU

For a graphics card, should I grab an RTX 5080, a 9070 XT, or a 7900 XTX

HeroDanny@reddit

I opted for the 5070Ti and it runs UE5 a lot better imo. I'm glad I spent the extra 200 on the TI version for my oblivion remaster playthrough. 16GB RAM is a big difference.

5070 is becoming a lot better value now.

Thinking of switching to 4K — will I actually notice a big difference?

Posted by BadKarma6996@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 502 comments

HeroDanny@reddit

I just spent $2,500 on a PC, 9950x, 5070 Ti, 64 GB of RAM, M.2 SSD. And on Oblivion remaster (UE5) on max settings 4k I get around 30-50 fps. If I play 2k I can get closer to 70-80 fps. I have 23" monitor so I just play on 2k.

Which game is currently consuming the most RAM and how much does it consume? Is 32 GB RAM enough or should I get 64?

Posted by Kron0s1@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 372 comments

HeroDanny@reddit

My old rig with 32 was getting maxed out while doing video editing, etc. But never for gaming. I just built a new pc about a month ago and went with 64. Is 32 enough? Sure, but in 4 years it may not be, so why not just start with 64 now and not have to worry about it? The cost difference was pretty negligible for me and I like to keep the same PC for 5+ years. (My last rig lasted 10!)

I'm a seasoned pc builder and even my last build had me freaking out a bit when my GPU wouldn't get recognized. I found out I was missing a power cable into the pci board. Point is you probably missed something and it's something silly. Take a deep breath, look over all your connections, take your time, it will be alright. Very unlikely you destroyed the whole thing. I work in IT and we take apart old computers all the time and they are mostly surplus so we don't exactly exercise caution. I've seen some insane things happen to computer and never do they break. I've zapped actually zero computer motherboards, I never wear a bracelet either. I'm not saying it can't happen, but it's so rare I really don't think you did anything to break it like that.

Is a 5070 TI worth it over a 9070 XT for DLSS 4?

Posted by FL_Maniac@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 74 comments

HeroDanny@reddit

I went with the 5070ti, I just trust nvidia more as a GPU company. But it sounds like the 9070 xt is better value. For me I just wanted to stick with what I knew and didn't mind paying the extra 200.

This might be one of the worst times for GPUs, ever.

HeroDanny@reddit

The only thing that went up in price for me was the GPU's. Unfortunately I had to bite the bullet and pay about $200 over MSRP to get my 5070 ti ($1,000 USD). I didn't want to but there were no other options in sight that made sense and I didn't want to wait another 6+ months when it is uncertain that it would even go down after then, could even go up.

My old 1080 was still going strong, I only recently upgraded to the 5070 ti to play oblivion on ultra settings. But my old 1080 served me well for 10 years.

Yeah it's a lot of money, my last build was 10 years old so I was able to justify dropping the $1000 (with tax) on my new rig. It's annoying I had to spend over MSRP, It should have been $800 which is already more than I wanted to spend, but hey YOLO and I really wanted to play max oblivion settings lol

Totally anecdote but my 5070 ti gets no hotter than my older 1080. I think this whole thing is way overblown. But then again I've only had my card for a week so we will see.

I recently just upgraded my whole PC (basically whole new build). Dropped over 2k on a 5070 ti and 9950x among other parts and now I am running oblivion on 2k ultra with tons of frames. Before I was getting about 30-50 fps on medium settings with my old 1080 and 5820k. The game now is absolutely beautiful and I love the ultra settings. But you are correct. The game still looked pretty good even on medium and my overall experience hasn't changed that much.

> and it looks like Oblivion is going to maintain that trend as well. Really? What res are you on? What's your target frame rate? My 5070 Ti has been crushing oblivion. I get 100+ fps on ultra settings often, although I have seen it dip to about 60 a few times, but honestly not noticeable unless I am looking at the fps counter. I play on 2k res.

OP Read this, My last rig was from October 2015, nearly 10 years ago. I also used the 1080 up until 3 days ago when I decided to finally build a new pc. I went with the 5070 Ti and so far it has been great. The oblivion remaster finally forced my hand to pull the trigger. I spent $1000 USD for my 5070 Ti and I believe it was a good upgrade. Although even the regular 5070 non Ti would still be an upgrade over the 1080 and it can be had for 60% of the price of the Ti. My original plan was same as yours, get the 5080 but prices were insane and the heating issues made me reconsider. I'm happy with my purchase. The 5070 Ti is closer to a 5080 than it is a 5070. It's a proper card and you'll be happy with it. I am now running oblivion remaster in ultra settings at 2k and consistently getting 100+ fps. The lowest I've seen was 60 fps and it was only when some insane things were happening.

Yeah they sound satisfying to press but I find I can type much faster and more naturally with a regular cheap keyboard.
