Expats with aging parents: how do you handle the distance?

I moved back when my dad got sick and ultimately died. And stayed, although I still don’t know how I feel about that now. Sometimes I like it. Sometimes I really miss Poland (and Russia, but I obviously can’t go back there)

For those who chose career over love, how did it turn out?

And that’s great, keep working on yourself, but there are loads of people in Europe who don’t need permits or sponsorships to do these jobs. That’s the point.

Are there options to leaving the US with no savings?

Posted by Laypin@reddit | expats | View on Reddit | 80 comments

GingerSuperPower@reddit

And I don’t disagree with you about that, I’m just saying OP doesn’t have much of a chance. Otherwise you’re right. Many people do. Although I’m in favor of canceling DAFT, I don’t see any reason to remain “friends” with the US under its current regime.

GingerSuperPower@reddit

I'm from the Netherlands. DAFT is fairly cheap, but life here is not. There is no way they would survive. I lived in Poland and Germany too; same situations there. You won't get by on disability, either, and in most countries as an immigrant you won't even be eligible.

Any fellow expats in the Netherlands who’s considering whether to stay or leave?

You got a bigger tax cut than any of the locals ever will, and for 5+ years, meaning your job pays enough to live comfortably or this ruling wouldn’t have applied to you - and you bought a house before the market went nuts. And in Amsterdam, no less. How hilariously ungrateful of you to complain while an increasing number of citizens are living below the poverty line. The world is on fire, but you have to contribute to it. From the comfort of your home. Oy vey.

This is why I said I don’t entirely agree, and why people have lived and worked and thrived in Transylvania for ages. You are right. I recommend OP reads Factfulness

GingerSuperPower@reddit

Oh damn, I thought it was more like a “2 years and then we reevaluate” type situation. Okay, that’s a biggie. Do you want kids? Obviously, people live and work and procreate there (have you been to Cluj? I worked there a few times), and it’s very much a country and area in transition. So your healthcare etc concerns are valid but are also improving rapidly. Would you have to get a job, or can you work remotely? Without speaking Romanian you’re going to have a hard time outside the bigger cities.

As a Dutch girl who lived and worked in a couple places in Eastern Europe and the Balkans, I don’t agree with your worries about Romania necessarily (while some things might be true). But from what I’m reading here, that doesn’t matter. You made up your mind, and that’s what’s important. This is a dealbreaker, and that’s ok! You just want different things. Better to find out now than further down the line.

I used to want to move to Sicily until I started working with Italian and Sicilian people. I’ve been scammed in Eastern Europe before but definitely not disrespected and fucked over the way I have in Sicily. Holy hell. Never again.

Hilarious, imo. I moved to Russia in 2021 (didn’t last long for obvious reasons), but my broken Russian was appreciated by the locals, they called me «наша иностранка» and had a great sense of humor about my learning process. It was awesome. I wasn’t as lucky in Poland, I guess my attempts at polish sounded too Russian for them.

I relocated to my home country for family reasons, but I did a similar thing when I moved away. I have a whole life spread across the continent, and I didn’t always include my now-ex partner in that. I invited him a few times, but not always. We are separate people with our own lives, and we can choose to connect as a couple or as a person when we see fit. You’ll need to figure out whether this is a long term issue for you, because this won’t change. His life and friends in Europe will not go away, and you won’t always (be able to) join him. Go to therapy for your jealousy issues and past trauma, and have a long hard think about whether this is what you want in life. It’s ok if you’re not as compatible as you thought. It’ll be sucky and painful, but better now than further down the line.

is it realistic to be a young single expat?

There are plenty of us. I’m back in my home country now but lived in Russia and Poland before, and I’m a single woman in my early thirties now. It’s normal to be a bit scared, but it’s totally doable if you can get the right to work or study somewhere.

Easiest way to move to Russia is to study Russian at Moscow University actually. But OP wouldn’t be allowed to work there, so it would still be useless. Wouldn’t recommend it right now for someone who doesn’t speak Russian, anyways.. for obvious reasons.

Hey, I worked in Russia when the war broke out and moved away (although I’m not Russian). I loved my life there and my friends are like my second family, so leaving and not coming back was rough. Montenegro is nice, and depending on your job and experience finding online work is not the end of the world. Also consider TEFL if you can. As a childfree woman: get out of Russia. It pains me to say that, but it’s for the best. I was crazy nervous each time I migrated, so is everyone else. It’s totally valid and normal to have these feelings.

Antikraak is a terrible idea, OP might be moving around every 3 months then and the houses are often in poor shape. He would be better off not having his 2k commitment in India, that’s waaaaay too expensive and 2800 for 2 people is tough.

Moving from Bangalore to Amsterdam

Posted by Bigp1mp@reddit | expats | View on Reddit | 39 comments

GingerSuperPower@reddit

OP, I’m Dutch. This is a good idea for many reasons: your child will get to go to a good European school, English is widely spoken here so it’ll be easy to get by and make friends in expat communities while you settle in, and if you change your mind in 5ish years, fuck it, move somewhere else in Europe. Get your PR here and take it from there. Sure, it’ll be a lifestyle change. A major one. But it’ll be worthwhile for that amount of money. You won’t want to live anywhere central with a small child anyways.

Usually landlords want you to make 3-4 times what you’ll pay in rent, so finding a place for 2000€ that they’ll let you have could be tricky anywhere. I live in The Hague now and wonder why not here btw?
