What were the feared teenage troublemaker types during your youth?

There was a lot of drugs but that is par for the course for most youth subculture. They didn't cause fights though or were particularly antagonistic.

Not sure that ravers belong on that list. I don't remember them causing any problems other than talking bollocks & incessantly chewing gum.

Asked to buy groceries for someone - is it a scam?

DenzLore@reddit

Did you get scammed? Probably. Was it a bad thing? Not necessarily. If they took the goods round to a local shop for them to resell then that isn't so good. If they take it round one of the estates then some low income family got some bargains that would obviously help them. When I was a kid all of our toiletries, some food & probably half my clothes came from junkie shoplifters. We would have really struggled without them. Stolen goods are just part of the economy on the estates. So even though that person may have taken advantage of you it doesn't mean it wasn't beneficial to someone else down the line. You intended to do a good thing & that is more important than potentially ignoring someone in need.

How many cups of tea per day is excessive to make for a builder?

As a general rule, if you offer we will drink it. Normally though just offer to make a drink when they are unloading the kit before the days work begins. Then when you see them packing up, offer to make another one "before you go." One at lunchtime is a nice touch but it's a bonus. We are usually on tight schedules so we don't like to break too often. Nothing wrong with just telling them to help themselves, they won't mind. Oh & biscuits are always a welcome addition. Just being offered a cuppa is always appreciated because not everyone does.

Is it weird to go out alone on a Friday night?

Posted by DescriptionFuture851@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 120 comments

DenzLore@reddit

No not weird at all mate. Pubs or bars are used to people being on their own & there isn't any judgement for it. How else do you meet people if you don't socialise? 'Fancy cocktail bar' is not my usual type of place, in fact I don't think I've ever been in one, just sit at the bar (if you can) & have a chat.

Is this still a custom?

About 6 years ago when my wife's aunt passed we were travelling along a country road to the cemetery when, what looked like two brothers saw the hearse & split to each side of the road, heads bowed like an honour guard. Really touched the family that total strangers could show such respect. I don't think I ever gave it much thought before then but I've taken to standing in respect as the first couple of cars pass.

Do you think the country would be richer in the long-run if the Job Centre spent a little money giving loans to send people on training or overcome financial barriers to work?

DenzLore@reddit

Like a voucher system, each person is given an allocated amount to cover their particular training. This would help with targeting skill shortages as well as providing inspiration for people to rejoin the job market. It's far too sensible it'll never catch on.

My house was broken into, they separated our keychains and house keys and just took the car keys. Why?

Posted by Gloomy-Kale3332@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 373 comments

DenzLore@reddit

You got hit by professional car thieves. They left everything else as it would tie them to the burglary. The car key doesn't necessarily link back to your home due to cloned keys. If arrested then why invite further charges when you can get charged with TWOC which, as a lesser crime is a few months in jail compared to burglary that can be a sentence of a couple of years. It's not just the CIA that likes 'plausible deniability.'

What the heck is going on with Londoners wearing shorts in icy temperatures?

I wear shorts all year round. I work outside quite a lot & am just used to being out in all weather. Also, I'm reasonably fit, developed muscles mean bigger arteries & veins so I can maintain my body temperature with little effort.

I’m a 32 year old man, about to make my first ever cup of tea for myself. How should I have it?

Tea is quite a personal thing. It also depends what tea. The best is obviously black tea, for me: Boil kettle then pour straight on the tea bag. Leave for at least 4 minutes, could be longer or as my brother says "strong enough to degrease an engine." Splash of milk, whole milk preferred, semi-skimmed is acceptable. Sugar, if you like. If you don't you must say 'no thanks, I'm sweet enough' it's obligatory. Poncy tea: Best if you don't use boiling water, steep for about 2 minutes. Slice of lemon works better than milk in most cases. Sip politely, while wishing for a 'proper cuppa'

Is living by yourself worth the expense?

Are you kidding? I'd been away for a couple of weeks & brought this girl back, like you do. I opened the door to a powerful wave of sweaty feet & rancid food. The lazy swine had done absolutely nothing while I was away. It was quite the passion killer I'll tell you. If you can, live on your own mate.

Is a plate sized Yorkshire Pudding a custom thing?

I used to make large filled Yorkshire puddings to trick my neice into eating some vegetables. Filled them in layers then covered in gravy so she couldn't avoid all the veg. They also make great bowls for ice cream.
