Can I have some advice for going away for work?

They would not have hired you if they didn’t think you were capable :) You won’t be expected to know everything straight away! If you get stuck or the transport fails you will work it out. You have a phone to Google things with and staff at train/tube/transport stations to ask for help. I travel for work quite a lot and I worry about forgetting items - at the end of the day if I walk out of the door with my laptop, phone and wallet I know i’ll be ok. Anything else I can probably buy a replacement for when i’n there. You learn the kind of stuff you tend to need whilst you’re away and adapt your list over time. For example, I always take several bottles of water in my suitcase as I drink way more than hotels tend to provide and i’m prone to headaches. I also always take my own travel hairdryer in case the hotel doesn’t have one.

Not this year but one year my Auntie ‘hid’ everyone’s presents in the boiler cupboard. She had bought everyone chocolate. Another year she stood up at the dinner table and spilled about half a bottle of prosecco allover the food…

Is the UK becoming more like the USA?

Perhaps not the answer you were looking for as I think you're looking for individual perspectives but the sociologist George Ritzer wrote about Americanization. You might find some of his work interesting.

I agree with your points except for the one around clean up. I just whack the drawers in the dishwasher every 2 - 3 uses and they come out brand new. The counter space the dual Ninja takes up drives me mad though.

What’s a completely insignificant thing that shouldn’t matter, but still winds you up way more than it should?

When there’s a long queue in the left hand lane leading up to a roundabout so the person wanting to go straight ahead “sling shots” by going in the right hand lane so people give way. Absolutely enrages me beyond belief. Why do you think your time is more important than everyone else’s? Also people that try and merge lanes way too late to try and get a few cars ahead.

My partner does something similar in that he’ll start driving whilst saying “what do you fancy doing today/where do you want to go?”. How do you know which direction to start driving if we haven’t decided?!

I used to work in retail and one of my main jobs was to rearrange the store. It used to enrage me to spend hours and hours rearranging it only to move it again the week after. I always used to think they probably paid me more in wages to move things than they made in an attempt to generate more sales through the move. Customers would come in confused when things moved and if I ever had a week off it meant I would be confused too when looking for things or directing customers. Was like being a brand new member of staff sometimes.
