What’s something that made you immediately realize, “yep, that’s it…I’m getting old.”?

I'm almost 58, and mine have been like that for several years. For the longest, they were the oldest-looking part of me, but I recently lost 72 pounds, and the crepe-y skin on my arms and legs is the stuff of nightmares! 😭😭

When I was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in 2009, I found out my oncologist was six years younger than me. I was 42, so at that time he hadn't been out of medical school long. Thank god he was an excellent doctor, cos I've been cancer free since 2010!

Was it easier to get dates back then

Posted by AdDapper4220@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 320 comments

DaisyJane1@reddit

From my vantage point, it depended on who you were and what you looked like. If you were popular and gorgeous/handsome, dates came easy for you. I was very shy and introverted back then, so no one asked me out until my senior year.

I’m guessing about half of the older Gen X had no home AC when we were kids? (USA)

DaisyJane1@reddit

I know the house we bought in 1978 had AC cos it was a new house, but the one after that in 1983 didn't. It was an old house that my parents had redone. They had HVAC put in a couple years later. Thank God, cos having bad menstrual cramps in Georgia summers was no fun!

MODS: This is relevant to GenX cos the Prelude's first generation was made from 1979-82. They were popular when i was in high school from 1982-86. Many early GenX'ers had one.

My parents have gotten into monarchs, too. They find them really interesting, especially the whole cocooning thing. There are a bunch of cocoons on their back porch right now full of worms becoming butterflies.

I turned 21 in 1988 and was all excited to buy some wine coolers that day so I could get carded. A couple of years prior, my state had passed a law requiring an "under 21" banner to go across the licenses of those underage, so I had renewed mine to take it off. I sauntered into the convenience store, ready to proudly present my new license. Bastard at the register never asked to see it, and I looked all of 12 at the time. 😡

Z93 in Atlanta. I loved listening to the morning show with Steve McCoy and Vicki Locke in the early 80s while I got ready for school. They would do these parodies that cracked me UP.

1967 here, and I will say that it seems a lot of GenX'ers think all of us came of age in the 90s. I did in the late 70s and early 80s and married in 1991 at age 24.

Favorite: Not giving a rat's ass what people think anymore. Worst: My kidneys quit working, but I'm grateful for the nurses and techs at my dialysis clinic. They are literally my lifeline.

Is College Now Ridiculously Easy Compared to Gen X college times?

Posted by Reader47b@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 402 comments

DaisyJane1@reddit

I can't say if it's easier now cos I don't have kids and finished college myself in 1988. I went to my local junior college, and it was freaking HARD. Many people I knew said that classes there were harder than the state university.

How many of us started school Tuesday after Labor Day (USA)?

In 1988, my cousin and I saw Chicago at a local festival for $6 each! The festival lasted a week, and to get in you had to buy a pin. The pins were good for the week, so you could catch some really good shows for almost nothing!

Wow, the last band I went to see with any regularity was Duran Duran. My last show before I became physically unable to go anymore was in 2011, and VIP packages were $600 with a chance to win a meet and greet! Floor seats near the stage were around $200. That's only been what ... 14 years ago?

My aunt hosted a baby shower one time and served a punch with pineapple juice, ginger ale and lime sherbet. It was DELICIOUS. I like Creamsicles, too (orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream). Ice milk blows, tho.

what was it like being a teenager for gen x?

Posted by mpbutter2@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 1409 comments

DaisyJane1@reddit

I'm another early GenX'er born in 1967. I turned 13 in 1980, and my early teen years were spent noodling around my neighborhood on my bike with other neighborhood kids my age. Mostly we hung out at the park at the end of my street, cos it had two tennis courts, a basketball goal, giant slide, swings, seesaw and horseshoes. When we got hot or restless, we'd head over to the convenience store at the subdivision entrance for sustenance -- frozen cherry Cokes, Hostess treats, candy bar and maybe a teen magazine or comic book. Weekend nights meant roller skating at Roller Disco! I got my driver's license on my 16th birthday. My parents had bought me a 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme when I turned 15 and got my learner's permit, so the bike was put away. I began driving to school and went out on weekends with my friends cruising around hunting cute guys. It was quite the magical time! I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I was NOT feral, mostly because I was born a sickly child in and out of the hospital with pneumonia and having to get gamma globulin shots cos my immune system was shit. All that made my parents a bit overprotective, although i was allowed free rein in our neighborhood. Mom quit her office job and got a job at my elementary school when I started first grade so I wouldn't be a latchkey kid.

What % of Gen-Xers here DO NOT HAVE KIDS?

Posted by deathbybukake@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 1747 comments

DaisyJane1@reddit

I didn't. I couldn't have them, which in hindsight ended up being a blessing. I've never had much patience with kids, so I don't think I would have been a good mom. I also got divorced in 2005 after 13 years of marriage and struggled financially, so having kid(s) to provide for would have been difficult.

My parents bought an antique tabletop grandfather clock at Cracker Barrel in the 70s when I was a kid. Back then they'd periodically sell some of the antiques decorating the store. The ones available had a red tag on them. They paid $100 for it way back then! No telling how old it actually is. They still have it and keep it on a cabinet in their office!
