I was part of the DARE era, they were teaching us about meth and heroin in kindergarten. I remember thinking people actually hid in alleyways with trench coats waiting to jump out at neighborhood child to force drugs on them…. Unfortunately I was wrong. It was the CIA the entire time.

For obvious reasons malls have always been very popular across my state, and still are. However, the amount of malls around the state has drastically shrunk over the past 20+ years. I suspect more will close as the economy falls off a cliff

What's the point of 500hp+ performance cars on the road?

Posted by VegaGT-VZ@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 508 comments

BusinessPlot@reddit

I’m sure someone else has already said this in the comments, but in the rare event they haven’t… First, OP, I agree with your post 100% When talking new vehicles, it’s marketing. Americans (admittedly or not) view the muscle car era with rose colored glasses. It’s cool, it’s manly, it’s American. When talking about consumers building up their personal vehicle, I think it’s fun, a hobby, street cred, etc. I enjoy it a lot. My silly off the cuff answer is, “cuz it’s cool fuck you” lol but you’re spot on. The funnest street car I have is around a 13.8 1/4 mile (on a good day) and handles pretty well while maintaining comfort for daily driving. Driving my 500hp 80’s shit box is fun, but it’s unruly and dangerous for the street. Not practical. Super cars are rich guy flexes and nothing more…. Unless they’re actually taking them to the track, but I’m sure those who actually do that are few compared to the amount sold. IMO Porsche is the way to go if you want a well balanced fast car that can both be daily driven and raced. Sure, a hellcat might be able to smoke you in a street race from light to light but that’s where their glory ends

Is there any American sports car that rivals European sports cars Porsche?

Assuming you mean manufactures who mass produce, the Ford GT is the obvious answer. Certainly there are boutique manufactures within the US who do as well but I’m not counting them.

Posted by Miserable-Wash-1744@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 419 comments

BusinessPlot@reddit

Anything 1996 and newer requires 2 mins or less of a warm up period to light off catalytic converts and get things moving properly. I’ve heard (from reputable sources) 30 seconds is good enough. The noteworthy components would be oil temps and emission operations. With modern oils and emission designs, I am fairly confident the 30 second mark is all that is necessary.

The patriot act which was mostly absorbed into the NDAA which has been a bipartisan bill since the beginning is where all of this stems from. If your favorite politician voted to reauthorize the NDAA and/or its predecessor the patriot act, they are partially responsible for what’s unfolding. As much as the people have fallen into the polarization of the issues America faces, the reality, they’re both responsible. This is what decades of voting for the lesser of two evils gets you.

Why do Americans dislike American cars?

Every car manufacture that has found success in mass production within the US market has made amazing vehicles while also making trash. Therefore you will find people who swear by or trash a particular manufacture. Rather than individual answers, you’ll need to look at the entire picture. Over the last 25 years, who has turned out long lasting products the most, you’ll typically land on Toyota. But even Toyota has made trash, they aren’t immune. If you’re going to neglect your car, get a Toyota. If you’re actually going to follow the maintenance schedule for (severe use) and ignore any oil change interval over 5,000 miles defaulting to anything under 5,000 miles, you’ll likely be just fine. To further help answer your question by only adding more confusion, I drive a Nissan product from their golden era, it’s easily the best car I’ve ever owned outside of a 2001 V6 Camry. But apparently Nissan is pretty trash these days…. So I hear. With new federal fuel average requirements, everything is trash. CVT transmissions and low tension piston rings are showing to cut reliability and longevity by a lot. Paired with the endless tech the consumer demands only adds to the frustration. tl;dr everything sucks buy an early 2000’s V6 Toyota, slap a modern touch screen CarPlay head unit in, do all the maintenance, and coast through life

I appreciate base model stuff myself. Obviously I prefer other levels but base model stuff is eloquent in its own way. Straight to the point, less shit to break, better fuel economy, sometimes faster even. Makes me wonder what kind of fuel economy manufactures could get if they went back to 90’s base model standards, size standards, with today’s engine/transmission technology

They’re nothing short of amazing. I still own the G. The integra has over 300,000 miles, nothing but maintenance. It only ended up in the junk yard because one snowy night my teenage mind thought I was a WRC driver, turns out my tires disagreed. I hit a curbs so hard sideways one of the CV’s enter the transmission. I’ve had the G since 130,000 miles, currently at 215,000. The only issues outside of maintenance and obvious wear parts (tires/brakes) has been a front lower control arm, the exhaust y-pipe due to rust, and a body control module that failed resulting in the fuel gauge not working ($80 at a junk yard). …and yes, I drive it like the stereotypical dbag Nissan/infiniti owner lol cuz ya know, I gave up on my dreams of the WRC so I could focus on my GT3 dreams

Minivans and station wagons are perfect for American families, not those gargantuan SUVs

Posted by NewAgePhilosophr@reddit | Autos | View on Reddit | 354 comments

BusinessPlot@reddit

I’m on board with you my man, the suburban dad drives a 1/2ton crew cab pick up because “testosterone” it’s hilarious. However, this is a generalization, when it truly is on an individual basis. I prefer sport sedans, I think people who buy a coupe version of a sport sedan are silly cuz typically the coupes weigh more… but whatever, what I think isn’t applicable in anyone’s decision making but my own. I have two children, a wife, and a large e breed dog. We have my car (sport sedan) and the wife’s rav4. When all four of us plus the dog go somewhere, my car isn’t an option and the RAV4 is cramped af. If we wanted to pack things like even one over night bag per person, we’re pretty much fucked. We make it work but a larger SUV/Crossover would be so much nicer. Just don’t care that much as we’ve never not done something due to transportation issues. However, a large SUV sounds very desirable. A van would work, but if we’re going to buy something bigger I see a full frame SUV as the better option as it gives us more versatility as we do want to buy toys that require truck to pull. The functional alcoholic, wrap around Oakley wearing suburban dads who think being a man is a well groomed lawn, sexually harassing 16 y/o cart girls, complaining when their children interrupt the Sunday football game, and driving a bourgeois fully loaded half ton pick up cuz vans = gay are indeed the apex of cringe

Minivans and station wagons are perfect for American families, not those gargantuan SUVs

Posted by NewAgePhilosophr@reddit | Autos | View on Reddit | 354 comments

BusinessPlot@reddit

Although I completely agree with you on the size of American anything, I have to say there are legitimate reasons for a full framed SUV. Furthermore, what exactly are you referring to when you say “gargantuan SUV’s?” I ask because many of the “large” SUV’s like a KIA Telluride/Hyundai Palisade for example are unibodies powered by the same/very-similar drivetrain as the Carnival, and their overall size is smaller, effectively making them minivans masquerading as SUV’s. There aren’t many full framed SUV’s available anymore, and their prevalence imo is become significantly less as the aforementioned crossover is becoming so popular. I can assure you, if you, your wife, 2 dogs, and three kids wanted to take your boat out for the weekend, you’d want a V8 powered full framed SUV… and it would still be miserable

Is it Time for the Era of the Remanufactured Car?

Posted by NoRegret1893@reddit | Autos | View on Reddit | 258 comments

BusinessPlot@reddit

They’re called certified used cars. Dealers do this. Full restorations aren’t required. The real issue is the length the average American keeps their vehicles. A full “frame off” (for a lack of a better term” restoration wouldn’t be cost effective, and transporting the vehicles across the country to a central “remanufacturing” hub wouldn’t be ecologically friendly. I understand this is just a thought experiment which is cool, I’m down for that, I’m not trying to poo poo on the thought experiment. I think what you seek already exists in some capacity (with minor mental gymnastics). The culture/consumer shift needs to shift into this realm of used/refurbished/retro-fitted vehicles along with taking the initiative when possible to learn how to repair their own vehicle. This is the most cost effective and ecologically friendly approach to the industry. Of course it has its flaws, but it’s a shift that can happen within existing industry infrastructure and logistics. Buying a new car is the utmost absolute worst thing anyone can do for the environment and their bank account
