Has anyone tried the new Italianos range Dominos, and is it good? How is it compared to regular Domino’s Pizza? And how does it compare to thin pizzas from other places?

Posted by Pizzafriedchickenn@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 15 comments

BellisPer@reddit

We had pizza today, and sometimes the Domino's grease is what you need. I had a normal small, other half had an Italiano. The verdict was that it's trying to be a pizza from somewhere that has a proper pizza over, but it doesn't quite manage it. If you want a Domino's, get a normal Domino's. If want posh pizza, don't bother with Italiano. Order from somewhere else.

There was a copy of this in our school library in the 80s. The illustrations terrified me, so naturally it was one of my favourites to grab whenever we had librarytime.

Do you celebrate Mother’s Day? What age did you start or stop celebrating Mother’s Day?

Posted by Dry-Initiative-1811@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 273 comments

BellisPer@reddit

We've always treated mother's day as family time. My siblings are a lot older than me so would always come over on mother's day (or the Saturday). Gifts were always small and not the huge commercialisation you see now. My husband's mum lives a way away so we don't see her, but will pop over to my mum this afternoon. My son is coming back from uni so he'll come with us to see her and then have dinner with us. Presents are still small. The best present is that I choose dinner without worrying if it's on son's current list of likes (which admittedly isn't the problem it was when he was little) and I don't cook it.

Sacked for Gross Misconduct – what do references look generally look like?

Posted by Shiny_Salamander_337@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 210 comments

BellisPer@reddit

You don't _have_ to use your last employer as a referee, but it might cause questions about why you're not using them. Most references I fill in are a quick form that asks for dates. Occasionally they ask for details of the role the person undertook, and even more occasionally if I would employ them again. Your employer would no doubt say "no" to that question.

Single parents of Britain - how do you make it work?

BellisPer@reddit

Have you asked him? Your dad and his wife might enjoy the change and the time with her! My parents are half an hour away by car as well, and they picked my son up when he was small. At 11 he was getting himself to school, so getting 3 buses (over an hour journey) was reasonable for him. It also used up some of the day. I don't drive so he was used to the bus journey. What I didn't do was ask them to cover everyday. It was like organising a military campaign with different places each day, but it worked and stopped burn out from them. Other days were a mix of WfH, leave, unpaid leave, camps over the summer, and a few overnights with family further away.

Is it legal for a UK University to introduce a fees for a placement year just before you start the placement, which they haven't mentioned anything about in the offer letter or CAS, nor in the archived website? I took student loan based on the fees mentioned before so this new fee is shocking to me.

Posted by Standard-Pop3158@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 11 comments

BellisPer@reddit

It should be in the T&Cs that you signed up to when you enrolled. There may be a separate fees policy document on the uni website that is referenced by the T&Cs themselves and it will be broken down there. It sounds like you're here on a student visa as you've mentioned CA. The overall tuition fee will be on there, but if the fee changes the CAS isn't updated (I think - I don't deal with that bit of the process). If you are here on a visa, don't go on a break in studies as some suggested as that will break the terms of your visa. Charging for a placement is normal as there are still admin tasks the uni undertakes. The admin never ends...

What A levels are you doing? What interests you? If training to be a sparky is what you love the idea of, do it. Doing a job you hate just for pay or kudos is a _bad_ idea. Studying medicine is hard, being a doctor is hard. It sounds like you could probably meet the academic standard, but from what I've seen you need to have a passion for it and not see yourself ever doing anything else. You don't sound _sure_. Doing something to be "the first" is a heck of a lot of extra pressure. Plenty of careers pay well and are academically stretching. If you're interested in being an electrician but want a more academic route, what about electrical engineering? There's medical-adjacent fields as well if you do want that area (e.g. biomedical engineering).

How long are you willing to commute for better quality of life?

Posted by PsychologicalBat4266@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 125 comments

BellisPer@reddit

I used to do this length commute by train 20ish years ago. It was perfectly normal then for London. By train meant I could nap/read/have an existential crisis easily. Driving that time would be a lot harder IMO because you can't switch off. I wouldn't do that length commute now because I've got used to commuting an hour or less and/or WfH.

Do you tell your kids that all presents are from Father Xmas, or that some are from you?

Posted by rm12345677@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 301 comments

BellisPer@reddit

Growing up, none were from Father Xmas. He was just the delivery service. With my kid there will be something small or a whole family gift like a board game that comes from him. This came from my in-laws. Kids are now grown, but Santa still puts little things under the tree. Technically, if _anyone_ says they don't believe in him the delivery service stops and that person gets nothing. No-one has dared risking saying it yet. Including me.

Etiquette/ fashion mistakes to avoid as an American?

BellisPer@reddit

TBH there's no way we won't know you're a tourist, but that's fine. We quite like the polite ones. We're not as chatty to strangers as you may be used to, but that's not rudeness we just have things to do (this probably applies more in London). We're not unfeeling though so if you're lost we'll happily help you out, but the conversation will be brief and to the point. The tourist sites are all mixed up with the places people are going to do their jobs and live their lives so we will be annoyed with tourists suddenly stopping in the middle of the pavement to take photos or gawp at things. An example - one of the best views of the Houses of Parliament is right outside a very busy hospital, so just be aware of people around you. More for outside London - that quaint 200/300/400 year old house? Someone lives there and it's not a museum. They probably won't mind you taking a photo but don't go in their garden.

You'll need a waterproof coat and shoes, and after that: layers are what you need. The weather could be anything. Snow? Maybe, probably not, but more likely in Wales and Scotland. Rain? Probably, but London doesn't get as much as the rest of the UK. Windy? Probably.

My girlfriend goes in for surgery on Tuesday, which is a non-invasive hysterectomy. What are some good things to put into a care package?

Posted by No_Hawk8947@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 109 comments

BellisPer@reddit

Assuming it's a vaginal hysterectomy, get a squeeze bottle for water so she doesn't have to wipe as much. _Everything_ down there will be sore, and it's not uncommon for the antibiotics to cause diahorrea. A cushion to rest against her abdomen when she's in the car because even without incisions externally, everything inside was cut and still moving into new places. Other people have said a body pillow - I'd also add a wedge pillow to help with sitting up

Going to uni is when you'll be in the position to meet a wider range of people rather than just your school friends, though the uni and will make some difference. You'll be surrounded by a huge variety of accents, outlooks and opinions, and everyone will be concerned about making friends. Avoid money-focused discussions and you'll be fine. There will probably be societies that cover your interests - join those and you'll find people that you can talk to and you know you'll have some common ground from the outset.

Do you ever use French words in your English conversations?

Posted by Advanced_Memory_9436@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 691 comments

BellisPer@reddit

I use terms like "mon petit chou" as well as other random bits of French. I'm more likely to say "quel temps fait-il" than "what's the weather" for example. I don't know why, other than my parents did it when I was growing up. Friends at school doing A level French also mixed languages a lot. I'm quite prepared to say we weren't normal in this respect though!

It's harder if it's a student-facing role because students are around at set times. I've worked in further and higher education for over 15 years and always had flexible hours, but I've never had to talk to students. The level of flexibility is down to your manager. Non-student facing roles would be things like returns officer, MIS manager, planning officer, maybe timetabling or exams roles as well.

HR accepted the combination of the two, but maybe I was lucky.
