Attempted burglary, how do you protect your home?

4.30am this morning just been woken up by jingling of keys in the rear garden bi-fold doors (we sleep in our bedroom downstairs pretty close to them). Got up and looked through the door and i see 2 hooded men one with torch and the other one trying to pick our lock. I have put the garden lights on but they must have though its a sensor light because they continued for a few seconds then i bang loudly on the glass door and they have ran away. We always leave the keys inside the lock and they are turned to the side, did that just wasted them some time and got my wife awake and overall contributed to stop this burglary? Whats the best way to secure property. The rear of our garden has no neighbours, just old disused railway track and woods. Would motion sensors and a camera be any good idea?
