It’s ‘Ethernet’ not ‘Eth-er-net’

How many years I’ve been doing this job and never bothered to check all the while confidently pronouncing it ‘eth-er-net’. Turns out it’s not just a prononciation quirk on my part, it’s wrong. My primary focus is networking which makes this all the more humiliating. Maybe it should have been spelled aethernet to help mouthbreathers like me!

Back in college, we used to play this tech buzzword game when you say a word or acronym like ICMP and the next person had to say something starting with 'P' (like POP3). That was funny to us geeks, but so annoying to all the non-techies, which made it funnier to us geeks.

Agree. It's always capitalized as well. In verbal conversation, we often default to more casual slang. "Have Adam pull 50 yards of Cat-6 through the ceiling and drop it in network closet number 7"

I feel like now more than ever people do not stress this sort of thing too much. My days are filled with Youtubers and podcasters that speak mediocre English, at best. Our tolerance is pretty high for that in IT.
