For those who can in theory, what is preventing you from being a Digital Nomad, or at least working from abroad for a month here and there?

I can't afford it. My workplace doesn't allow working from another country if you're not there on business. My cats. I like living in my own home, not someone else's. I don't like very hot weather.

I'm in the south east and love the weather here. I'd never want to go somewhere hot as heat gets too much for me. I love that in the UK we can have all four seasons in one day.

My wife and I looked at doing this years ago before we had children. We both love sailing and had the money to buy a decent yacht, rent out our house and travel the world. I’ve crossed the Atlantic both ways so it wasn’t a pipe dream. We decided we just didn’t want to be away from our family and friends for such long periods. That sort of lifestyle can get very lonely even with your partner to share it with.

Two of my friends did it and were somewhat disappointed with the experience. They actually ended up cutting the trip short. A good chunk of the time the internet connection wasn’t reliable enough to work properly. Also it was a major issue that you are in an amazing place that you want to explore and experience, but can’t because you have to work. Also time differences are a thing, so you can be in a beautiful beachside location in Thailand, but if your customers and colleagues are in Britain then you’re going to work some weird hours.

A few months seems extreme and would cause issues with constantly having to find new accommodation and such. But a week away here or there is easily done, get an air bnb (I know I know) for a nice week away then came back home to your house here. I'd probably just take the holidays though so I don't have to work

Just this Monday I called my boss stating "my gran is sick". Other bosses would allow me to work from abroad, but my current workplace doesn't allow me to work outside of the UK. I work temp jobs for 6 months or so per contract, and I usually do spend a month or at least 2-3 weeks in Cyprus.

Guts, basically. We had a very real option of moving to Jamaica and I could easily have worked from out there. My income would have given us a very good standard of living. We researched everything from health and car insurance to firearm requirements. But then another British couple were murdered and that made us pause. In the end we expanded the business in a direction that needed us in the UK, and that was that.

It's a pain in the arse, basically. Vetting accommodation is quite difficult (internet speeds aren't always as advertised, and depending where you go, security measures on the property aren't always great), necessary equipment can be difficult to either source or transport (screen setups for me), working abroad can have tax and visa requirements which need to be researched even if they're not arduous. It's just a whole thing.

1) the cat 2) insurance only lasts 30 days 3) home insurance. They don't like me being away for over 30 days. That's about it. I've worked away a lot over the years so it holds no fear for me. It just doesn't fit right now.

My work actually promotes is. So long as you make sure you're permitted to work there...that's a big problem people don't anticipate. Also your internet connection must be suitable and secure. Not a big problem but certainly rules out some countries. The people I know who did it...did it once. They noted how nice it was for a laugh, but it wasn't clear if they were on holiday or not. Working the same amount of hours, at weird hours of the day.

Cheaper is appealing, sure. But I'm used to the weather here, I know the language and how things work and I have family and friends here. There's all the planning required to go pick a country, ensuring that I could contract properly overseas as a business and then navigating the taxes in two places (including compatibility and double taxation). Working remotely would likely require a salary decrease from where I am as I work in big tech. It sounds like a great idea on paper to disappear for a month to work from the beach, but I'd rather work from a comfortable office with perks and then spend a couple of weeks relaxing on the beach instead without all the other headaches.
