Does wearing your smart watch with associated fitness apps stop you wearing fashion watches?

I’ve got some nice watches that I don’t wear because my fitness app admonishes me if I leave it off!

I don't own any more working real watches. Few years ago when my last one died, I stopped wearing watches because my phone told me the time. Then I bought a cheap fitness tracker for like £30 which also told me the time. Then I upgraded to a smart watch.

I haven't worn a watch since I bought my first mobile phone about 26 years ago

I was just about to call you an old person for having a mobile that long ago, but just remembered I got my first one 23 years ago. Now I feel old.

I'm so old I remember before mobile phones, there were car phones - phones that were installed in cars and couldn't be taken out.

I can just about remember that. We didn't have one but one of the lads from school had it.

Due to Dad's work, he had one as he spent a lot of time in the car.

Don't worry, I am old. I was 30 when I got my first mobile.

I use a casino clone smart watch at work and a fancy role looking smart watch when I go out. 👀

What's a casio clone smart watch? Do you have a link?

Fantastic. I always thought someone should do this. Is it and whatever app it uses any good?

It's okay, the fitness side doesn't seem to work correct, but I use it for notification, weather, music control and obviously time keeping. The faces are okay too. I have a digital neon blue at the moment.

I would only want it for the fitness and timekeeping so no good for me. Nice to see though

It says I average about 10.000 steps a day but my phone says 4000 so it might be tracking my movement in my arm? 🤔

I think double watch is only appropriate if you're a NATO general about to hunt down Saddam Hussein. Maybe easier with watch + fitbit-like bracelet

Yep that’s why I sold my Apple Watch. It felt like I had to wear the watch even though I didn’t use any of the data it tracked.

Probably just wear the smart watch when you’re doing fitness related stuff

I wear an Oura Ring; it gathers similar telemetries as a smart watch but is minimalistic enough to be passed off as random jewellery

Yes and no. Sometimes i prefer my smart watch to track steps etc but other times i want to wear a smart looking nice watch. All about the outfit and what i am doing that day. I never wear both, that isnt a good look.

I’ve got an expensive watch, and wear an Apple Watch. When ever I put my expensive watch on I take it off after about 10 minutes it’s so uncomfortable.

No, I wear my fitness tracker on my right arm and a proper watch on my left, I love watches and nothing will ever stop me wearing a real one.

I stick to nice classic watches. Have never been enticed by a smart watch so I’ve not had a problem.

I have an Apple Watch and a Garmin fitbit-type device. If I'm wearing a "normal" watch, I'll wear the Garmin on my opposite wrist. If I'm doing an actual physical activity - going for a run, for example - I'll wear my Apple Watch. I do sometimes wear the Apple Watch instead of a normal watch, but as I have a collection of 70+ watches, I need to wear some of them sometimes.

I double watch. Then again a little bit strange in that I wear my watch on my dominant hand anyway, so wearing a fitbit on my offhand just seems fine

I used to have a really nice Gucci watch that I wore for 20 years back when the quality was A+. Saw it in a magazine and fell in love with it. Finally got rid of it because I was tired of having it serviced and cleaned and it served its purpose. Other than getting nice compliments on it was just a watch at the end of the day that told me the time. The value of a piece of jewelry is what people think it’s worth and are willing to spend. I appreciate a smartwatch and the motivation/reminder it gives me to keep active. I probably will never go back to a ‘normal’ fashion watch.

Personally, I like those rubber/silicone bands around arm. I've always had atleast 2 bands around my left arm for past 16 years. Proper classical watch will look odd and out of place on my arm. So in all I don't wear any classical watches. However, I wear Samsung watch 4 with rubber strap, so it doesn't stand out between 2 other bands around my left arm. Before I had narrow Samsung fit2 tracker, which fit nicely. Again, that's just my personal quirk. I think that smart band (like fit2) on one hand and classical watch on another hand would be acceptable middle ground of classic and modern.

I tried a smart watch for a bit, and I absolutely HATED the fact I was basically online the whole time. Went back to a normal mechanical watch which I love and doesn't buzz me every moment the McDonald's app is selling cheap chicken nuggets... (Yes, I'm well aware you can control notifications on them... No it didn't bring me any quality of life benefits over my phone buzzing in my pocket for the same thing)

I've moved away from wearing a smartwatch in recent times, as i was only using it for fitness and time telling. Now i wear a classic watch on one wrist and a fitbit on the other.
View on Reddit #24983201

Forever_a_Kumquat@reddit

I have a few nice omegas and Tudors, but my Garmin 965 gets pretty much all the wrist time. I really wish Garmin made a small and discreet band that still tracks most things when you aren't doing an activity and syncs it to your main watch and Garmin connect. Even if it doesn't have a screen, much like the old jawbone up. I like to have 24hr tracking for various health reasons but that stops me wearing my nice watches.

I just wear a Casio F-91W. Design classic. 😍 As far as fitness apps go, I only run so the Casio has a stopwatch and my phone records the distance...
View on Reddit #24979541

sjr606@reddit

I also wear this and refuse to wear any other watch. I do have a garmin on the other wrist but it doesn't look anything like a watch. More just a black band with a very small screen
View on Reddit #24981882

All the adds-on and constant data collection/feedback from smart watches actually turned me off running for a while. Got too in my head about pace, heart rate, mileage etc. Nowadays, I go for a run with my Casio with no headphones and just run by feel until I want to stop.

I have a fitbit and bought an 'unofficial' metallic strap from amazon so it looks more like a watch and less like a fitness tracker.

The other day I went out with my smart watch and my Pokémon go autocatcher on the same wrist. Felt silly but eh. Who cares? I was never really a big watch person since I had my phone.
View on Reddit #24981198

CeresToTycho@reddit

I've gone back to wearing mechanical watches after wearing smart watches since the original Pebble. I tried a watch on each wrist for a time, but it looked and felt silly. Ive realised that I just dont care to track my exercise unless I'm at the gym, running, swimming or otherwise training intentionally. I don't care about having more notifications to distract me. While I work from home, I just don't wear a watch. Mechanical watches are pretty, fun accessories which I wear when I want to look nice.

I miss my pebble so much. I loved that red, blocky device. It didn't give me the health apps, but you could use it without looking at it and tapping a screen with ease. So if I was cycling and listening to music, I could skip songs without looking.

No, I’ve always worn a watch but never fashion watches. The last non smart watch I had was a cheap Casio, I have kept my last Garmin though since it’s more dressy and I’ll be able to still track some data.

Yes! I have a fit it, gifted by my husband and sure I love it, but I like watches and would like a nice one but now I'm also hooked on the tech that comes with a smart watch. I have never thought smart watches look good
View on Reddit #24979632

You could get a WHOOP or an Oura ring rather than a fitness watch. For me personally I'd rather just have my Garmin on all the time and not have any nice watches.

Whoop is £200 per year for the membership, and I don't think the Oura tracks outdoor activities with GPS trace, does it?

Yes! I keep looking at smart rings for this reason. I have a health condition so some of the body tracking is really useful to me, but I miss putting on a nice watch occasionally

Yeah absolutely - but this has actually saved me a lot of money over the years. I did think about getting a fitness ring instead, but I've gotten so used to my garmin I think I'd miss it.

I do that when I’m bicycle touring. One to tell the time and the other is a sport watch.
View on Reddit #24978949

astromech_dj@reddit

I’ve dumped a smartwatch in favour of some proper watches. I have a Timex Expedition and a Casio CA-53WF in olive drab. Only time I miss the watch is during exercises but I kind of realised all those stats are meaningless bullshit anyway. It was a cheap Chinese smartwatch so I was worried about the data harvesting, which is literally what that tech is created to do.

When I first got my Garmin Venu it was a novelty. I lost a bunch of weight and subsequently lost interest in the data so now it's just another device that spams me all day. It spends most of its life on the charging stand or on dnd. The data supliments the bike computer so it's handy when cycling and it's handy when travelling as it syncs to the local timezone drama free. I prefer to wear one of my actual watches than a low powered computer that doesn't get software updates anymore. I like Garmin though, great ecosystem.
