When did it become normal for men to wear wedding rings?

A recent post about passing down rings got mr thinking... My parents got married in the mid-80s, and my dad has never had a wedding ring. When I was a kid I thought this was normal, and when I came across men with wedding rings, I thought it was weird and even 'effeminate', then one day it dawned on me this is very normal. Is my dad the exception, or is men wearing wedding rings a relatively new phenomenon? (Also my grandad married in the early 50s, he used to wear a claddagh ring on his thumb, but I don't remember a wedding ring)
