When did the nail salon boom begin?

When I was young in the UK (80s and 90s) people used mostly pain their own nails. Getting your nails done may be a wedding treat or for a big treat? I noticed when I returned to the UK, women (family and friends that I know) were often talking about getting their nails done. These are not affluent women. They are accountants, nurses, hair dressers, secretaries. I'm told the norm is around 40 quid per session and they have to go every 2 to 4 weeks. It just seems an extreme expense for something you can do yourself. When did the trend begin to take flight and can anyone suggest what caused the luxury to begin?
