San Diego to South Carolina in my $600 Buick LeSabre

Bought this car in Greenville South Carolina where I live (see post photos). I like Buicks in the 90s and early 2000s because they are cheap, (typically) unappreciated, durable, great gas mileage and super comfy.
The car only had 80,000 miles and was parked after the 1st owner died. It sat for 8 years but i was able to start it and drive it home about 20 miles away.
After checking it out, i replaced upper & lower intake gaskets and upper manifold. Replaced transmission fluid, fuel filter, plugs, wires, alternator as well.
My son needed a car in San Diego so i shipped it to him. He’s been enjoying it and keeping up the maintenance. My son is now leaving the navy after 4 years and is coming back to South Carolina.
I decided to fly out there, pack up his apartment and then have a fun father-son drive back. 4000 miles in 2 weeks.

First 3 pics is how i found her.

4-6 is maintenance work. The lower plastic intake gaskets failed which was expected. I dumped the oil several times to make sure all the water was out.
-
7 is Hollywood. It was freezing up there.
-
8-12 around the Grand Canyon and other miscellaneous. Thank you to the police man that gave my son a pass for not stopping at a stop sign

Yuck your lower intake manifold is full of mud. I did cleaned mines real good before putting back in

That pic uis before cleaning. Its what happens when the gaskets fail completely

Wow awesome, I love American cars from 90s. My cousin who lives in US drove from Chicago to Los Angeles in his old Mercedes w124 250td sedan and it did well.

Just got a 1999 for my kid to learn to drive in that has 100k miles. That darn thing floats down the road and runs like a champ. I did have to replace a ton of blown fuses however and need to replace a few odd pieces.

Good choice. Great safety and low cost
mikestang_89@reddit
Yeah it’s definitely a tank! I’ve got a year to polish it up.

Good stuff. I just recently bought one for $1k. It did need some work though which is why it was for sale. The owner didn’t want to spend more money on it.
I did the water pump, coolant elbows, t-stat, aluminum elbows, new upper intake manifold, new metal lower intake gaskets. Plus the coolant hoses and shocks. Paid less than 1k in parts and I did all the work myself.
For less than $2k I have a running car.

You nailed it. That’s the important part of the basics on these Buicks. I did the fuel filter and transmission fluid.
On my 2001 and newer Buicks, i pull out the solder and replace all the dash lights. I think the 98 has plugin bulbs

Your post is exactly what this sub is for, and also exactly what's still good about reddit. I love it.

Thx, i appreciate it

Hell yes! Those 3800s will run forever! One of the worst things GM did was get rid of that engine. Sure it was antiquated, but it was a solid engine that could easily go past 300,000 miles with minimal maintenance!

I agree. I typically draw the line at cast iron blocks and heads. Apart from my wife’s Camry, all my daily drivers and my kids daily have to be cast iron. If you over heat, it’s usually not a problem.

Just wanted to say it sounds like you're a good dad
bohica_cu@reddit (OP)
I hope so but sometimes i wonder. Thx
slurpyderper99@reddit
Hey man don’t worry about it, you clearly care about your kid and that’s all that matters. Not all of us had that

Did you stop by Alien Fresh Jerky while in Baker? They have some amazing stuff, but I had to get off their email list when I started getting multiple spam emails from them every day.
bohica_cu@reddit (OP)
No, i missed a lot of stuff i wanted to check out. My biggest miss is not getting a short from Compton about Compton. I drove through it once and decided to let that one go.

I did a 3000 mile road trip a week after I bought my $650 Volvo 240!

How dare you deprive the local dodge dealership of a 26% interest sale!

Lesabres are great. A buddy and I took a $500 85 Lesabre 6000 miles in a couple weeks and had a blast
bohica_cu@reddit (OP)
LeSabres are absolute gems. Very under the radar. Tons of features that are still optional on modern cars. Especially with inflated car prices, these are invaluable
Real_Mokola@reddit
I can think of LeSabres that are readily available Buicks around here. If they really are as good as I get the impression here, I might look into these. The other one being Electra
Blu_yello_husky@reddit
Well of course it needs intake gaskets. They all need intake gaskets

Awesome story. Although they’re always one of the top brands for reliability Buick really don’t get the recognition it deserves.
With trends going to ride comfort and interior styling hopefully Buick won’t be overlooked for long as that’s really what makes Buicks so great … reliable, low cost of maintenance, comfortable interior, excellent ride.

you trying your own top gear special or something?

All my cars happen to be high mileage general motors so maybe i am

Pretty dependable.

My dad owned one of those years ago. Can't imagine a more comfortable car for a cross country trip.
r_golan_trevize@reddit
We had an ‘01 LeSabre a couple of family cars ago and it is still my favorite road trip car of all time.
DankestDubster@reddit
Mine too. Company cars. Had a bunch of Caprice classics, Park Avenues and Bonevilles. I still have a soft spot for a Roadmaster. Now that’s a cruiser.
bohica_cu@reddit (OP)
For sure. Never was sore or uncomfortable.

This is top quality father and son time. Excellent work.

Congrats! What a beauty

I would have been more surprised if it didn't make the trip.

epic
stormingsteel@reddit
This is a happy story. Going from a sad uncertain beginning to a resurrection, then to mosey on thru this beautiful country. A father and son adventure in a Buick living it's best life.
I see a moral of this story to any of you reading this going through a hard time in life... Look at that Buick and where it started. Stay positive, but make positive change. If nothing changes, everything stays the same. Once you start making good decisions, and positive change... You truly never know where you will be a year from now.

I love seeing stories like this where someone takes a neglected car and brings it back to its former glory instead of getting it to barely run and driving it into the ground.
jimmers14@reddit
Had this gen LeSabre as my first car I miss that car was so comfy
Tibbles88@reddit
I have a 97 I'm waiting to get a torque converter in! I love that car!
