Are all canned goods safe long after expiration?

I want to start prepping, but I don't know whether or not canned foods are actually safe past their expiration, I know in movies and such, they can last forever, but does that go for real life too? This goes for like canned soups, foods, coke, whatever canned, is it all okay?

Nothing lasts forever, but canned goods can last for much longer than the date on the can if you aren’t concerned with an increasingly stale taste, they aren’t damaged, and they are stored properly. Depending on the food itself, it’s proper expiration will usually be obvious in excessive gas when you open the can, bad smells, suspect discoloration, etc.

Honey lasts close to forever. Stock up on honey!!

Honey only lasts for extended periods of time if kept dry, so it does need to be stored in a sealed container to fully prevent spoilage

I’ve read that pull-top cans have less longevity/reliability than the ones you need a can opener for, so I tend to favor stocking the can-opener type. With those, I feel confident for years past the date, provided it’s stored in a cool place.

I had a pull-top can of carrots within the expiration date making a weird hissing noise. Now I don't even want to eat those that aren't expired. Very annoying.

the hissing noise is because it's vacuum packed

My partner refuses to eat ANYTHING by the best buy date. I have explained to him OVER AND OVER again they are safe but he is so locked into this wrong information

Well I hope you didn't get all the wrong advice from this post

When we bought this house in 1999 there were jars of home canned peaches and pears in the basement. They had been jarred in the early 70's. They look absolutely beautiful, like fine art. I couldn't bring myself to eat them though but it was tough throwing them out.

Sploosh. Like in holes. But you should’ve at least given them a sniff. Your god given senses will tell you if something has gone bad haha

You can't smell botulism.

If the can isn’t damaged and doesn’t hiss when you open it then it’s probably fine. So you can’t smell it but you can hear it

In the military we ate 36 years old canned military rations, and nobody in my unit could tell the difference between a 2 year old and 36 year old ration. The canned meat Roald Amundsen brought with him to the South Pole, and had crossed equator twice with sailing ship, was still edible over a 100 years later when i was opened by a microbiologist at the canning laboratory in Stavanger. The meat was still surprisingly red/fresh looking and no harmfull bacteria was found.

There are clearly superior and inferior methods of canning because 8 months past due beans taste like the can they're stored in...

I regularly eat SPAM several years past its expiration date. So far it's been just as delicious as any other can of SPAM.
And you can take that however you like. LOL
redditigation@reddit
I took it as SPAM is so artificial it can't expire

I just opened members mark canned chicken that was best by April 2022 in a pull top can. I made chicken ‘burgers’ with it and they were fine. 😃
