Stuck in the right seat..

Posted by Pristine-Pizza7198@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 40 comments

Hello, I'm a FO at a Major and want to know what's the fastest way to get to the left seat? I've considered contracting for charters to get into the left seat to get PIC time.

Am I really stupid or is this question really stupid? Are you asking how to bypass the seniority at your company?

Dude seriously your an idiot. What do you do outside of a jet job you have to get to the right seat. Contract?

You should be legal to be in the left seat by the time you are at an LCC, or shortly thereafter. You just have to bid for it my guy. I'm not sure if you're brand new to 121 operations, or if you've just been hit on the head a few times but there's not a whole lot to it.

It's not the left seat that I really care about, it's the fact that I'm one of those guys that went to a major with no PIC time that every CA holds against me, it's really irritating. My top bid is our junior has CA slot. It's just feeling like your career slumped.

>I'm one of those guys that went to a major with no PIC time that every CA holds against me, So you're upset that you got a brass ring job with very little experience and no one is kneeling down to kiss the ring?

I wish it was possible to Matrix-style implant the memory of being a regional FO circa 1995 for 6 months to give these kiddos some perspective. Then maybe they could be grateful for the incredible position they lucked into rather than being resentful of it not being enough.

I really hate that the current generation has turned me into a "kids these days" kind of guy but holy shit are they oblivious to how good they've had it.

The captains you fly with have no impact on your career. Only your seniority matters. Getting more PIC will likely have no impact on how they treat you. That might not be true... They may think you are an even bigger idiot for wasting time by contracting....

I'm guessing they have no issues figuring out this guy is an idiot.

Career slumped because you have to put your time in at a major before upgrading to captain? Definitely been hit on the head.

You want to know what the fastest way is to get in the left seat, but you don't care about the left seat? Huh?

Not trying to dog pile this guy but also just.. doing charter work, presumably for a 135 since he wants PIC turbine time ain’t gonna fly with a 121 carrier. Since he said he wanted to do it for clout.

Maybe OP is trying to find hitmen to off his coworkers in a roundabout way?

Upgrade is 5+ years out. We're the texas based LCC..
View on Reddit #24424146

x4457@reddit

Then you'll be waiting 5 years. You're at Southwest, how did you get to Southwest without knowing how seniority bidding works?

Logbooks can be filled in with pencil or ink.. and it's desperation, I'm tired of senior CAs looking down at me because I'm one of those shithead FOs that got lucky during the great hiring boom. I'm just trying to get in the left seat outside of the company at this point.
View on Reddit #24424677

Real-Mission-1225@reddit

Maybe they're shitting on you because you're a hhorrible inexperienced FO who is way behind the operation but thinks he should be the captain?

x4457@reddit

> I'm tired of senior CAs looking down at me because I'm one of those shithead FOs that got lucky during the great hiring boom. And you think having more random non-airline PIC time in your logbook is going to change that? 1) Stop being desperate for validation 2) Stop giving a fuck what other people think. You're in that seat, who cares how you got there. Let them have their opinions because those opinions have exactly zero impact on your life.

How do you work at a major and have no idea how this works?

Do your job well, impress the captains you fly with. Excel at training events. Be humble.  Last one might be a challenge. I don't think Sporty's has a course for it.
View on Reddit #24424447

flythearc@reddit

Honestly yeah. I would imagine most captains do not care how you made it to the majors if you’re good to fly with on a personal and professional level. They don’t need to know what’s in his logbook. If they’re giving someone shit, I imagine it’s a little deeper than not having 121 PIC time.

OP is either... 1. ...the most unaware airline pilot I've ever heard of. 2. ...not what they say they are. I can't think of a third possibility.

You made it to Southwest and actually don’t know how seniority works?? You do your job, don’t fuck up, and wait for your number to come up. You actually think anything outside of your job helps get an upgrade?!

View on Reddit #24424846

Kives_177@reddit

So your captains are going thru your logbook before your trip to find out you have zero 121 PIC? I didn’t think so. Hint: if you don’t want them to find out (other hint: they don’t GAF) then don’t tell them. What an odd, potentially extremely idiotic post

Go get checked out at a flight school and rent. Boom done.

Yeah that's what I'll end up doing and if there's volunteer work. It's depressing.
View on Reddit #24424452

Real-Mission-1225@reddit

And what difference is that going to make? Now you can impress the skipper with your 172 PIC time?
View on Reddit #24424626

Fake_Pilot@reddit

Why do you want to upgrade so badly? You can’t just jump seniority.
