no name vs used tires?

For a FWD vehicle for someone who likes to do a pull now and then, and take some turns quickly...
In order to keep costs down, would you rather buy a set of brand name used tires (3 years old, or younger plenty of tread), or a set of off-brand tires?

As someone who bought used tires a few times in my younger broke days... don't do it. They're a crapshoot and you end up not saving much. There's some off-brand tires that perform pretty well for the money, read a lot of reviews and independent tests and you'll find some that won't break your budget and will serve you better than used tires.
I put a set of Lexani LXUHP-207 tires on my FWD DD a couple years ago and they've been great, they grip really well, they do ok in the wet and they're not wearing out fast. They saved me about $50-60 per wheel over similar spec name brand tires, so I'm happy with them and I'll probably buy them again (ymmv, literally)

I really want to know what tyres and what prices everyone that claims such buys.
Got used tyres multiple times and cannot see a negative. Usually few years old and ~80% of original thread. Obviousy no patce or not rotten, seeing if theyre not hard like a rock.
Like literally nexen winguard sport 2. Bought 60€ per tyre, original price ~100€. Few years but were in good condition lots of thread. Even if theyre all season grip pretty well. Drove in summer with them (dont ask) and even being with very low thread, bald on inside even then I am able to control the car.
The funny thing to me is that people always scream about tyres but still fly off the road. Maybe a universal driver problem than a tyre problem. I simply cannot understand how all of you unable to drive on good condition used tyres when I can run with bald ones. If youre unable to adjust to conditions and drive like an idiot its not the tyeres fault

As someone who put about $1500 into their Civic's suspension in their early 20's and then cheaped out on used tires, I would spend the money on good tires before I'll ever spend another cent on suspension upgrades. The tires made such a big difference, it's short-sighted to neglect them if you want to drive in a spirited manner.

In almost every respect, at least when it comes to performance and safety, it makes more sense to spend less on literally any and every other element of the car (other than necessary repairs), including the car itself, than to save money on tires.

Agreed. Tires and breaks are the most important part of rhe car. I have perrilli p7's on my Subaru impreza. Sticks like glue to the road.
Snow tires on orginal rims. With the traction control i can drive in snow like dry and stop in half the distance than all season tires.

If you'd like to plow into a tree because the tires are dry rotted, go used.
Seriously, do not ever cheap out on brakes, suspension or tires. They are quite literally your reason to being able to stay on the road. Used tires may only be good if you are just driving to and from work and maybe to the super market for food.
Any sort of performance level driving, don't cheap out. Dry rot in old tires is a problem and can lead to a blown tire (I found this out the hard way after hitting a bump), or loss of traction in the even of hard braking or unfavorable road conditions.

Tires degrade over time even if unused, do not buy used ones.

Can't answer for myself because I don't like fwd and don't like driving fast, but one of my friends does both and he always bought used high ends tires for his car. I would make fun of him because he was paying the same I was for new tires and he only got 1/2 as much tread
FontainePark@reddit
Honestly I contemplated used tires for a bit, because I wouldn't accept cheap tires. Ended up going for financing new good tires and haven't regretted it

Ask your tire guy what the store brand is and what tire it's name brand counterpart is. Most major brands have a budget store brand that you don't have to pay advertising for. Sumitomo did many people well because its the same tread pattern AND composition as name brand.
If you drive like me, get good name brand tires and the warranty.

IMO it's cheaper in the long run to buy a set of good brand new tires. They'll last longer, handle better, and will have better wet and snowy grip than cheap or used tires.
As with many things in life, it's often better to spend more on a higher quality item that will be safer to use and longer lasting.

Cheap new tires are better than expensive old tires. They'll just wear out faster so you'll be back buying tires again in about two years.
johafor@reddit
I concur. Unless you know for sure, the old tires could have been stored in a way not very beneficial for the rubber. That makes old used tires way worse than new non premium/no name tires.
One time I bought used tires. Never again.
