Is moving all IT documentation to Teams a good or bad idea?

We currently have it all on a shared drive, we've started using Teams Channel for some of our working stuff and the boss now wants to simplify things and put everything in one place and is pushing for teams. I'm familiar with onsite backups but not as familiar with Teams and retention/backups. I checked with one of our guys and said that the retention is set to 93 days which is a big concern if this is where data lives. Are there some best practices we should follow, should we avoid this (& if so, why?)
