Yeah, doesn’t matter. Manufactured in different countries to different standards of quality,with different parts. Just because some things are interchangeable does not mean they are the same vehicle. I own 2 of them.

The first and second gen 4Runner was the same vehicle as the pickup/hilux up to the front doors. Same frame, suspension, engine, transmissions etc. I have a bullbar that fits both 4Runners and Pickups up to 1995. I have owned both and worked on both. The front end, drivetrain and interior are mechanically the same up until 1995

They didn't say it looked like the original, they said the 4 runner used to look like the original pickup it was based on. And this is going back to that same philosophy. This looks like a Tacoma with a bed cover got stung by a bee, it's all swollen! The 4Runners before this were, for the most part, kinda boring, and leaned utilitarian. They've gotten bigger with time, but they really used to be like, "I haul humans and when they're not in here I haul lumber and whatever else". Now it looks like it's for the dad with three kids who puts a Punisher sticker on every vehicle they own.

Toyota hybrids in this TNGA-F platform aren’t designed for efficiency, they are for power. Tundra gets like 1-2mpg more with the hybrid.

The Tacoma already gets 1 more MPG highway than the Land Cruiser, probably due to size and the part time 4x4. So a shorter car with a rear hatch should at least get 1 more MPG if not 4.

Weight matters way more here than anything else. These vehicles are already aerodynamically very inefficient, a covered bed is going to make 1-2mpg difference max.

I’m one of those people that bought a truck (a Tacoma) when I should have bought an SUV. After 10 years of owning a Tacoma I have come to realize how impractical having an open bed vs a closed trunk. Simple things like getting groceries have to be put in the back seat etc. The bed has come in handy for moving large items but it’s pretty seldom I use it legitimately. A 4Runner/suv is a better choice. You get a closed trunk and a much bigger backseat. If I need to transport something large I could rent a trailer.

If you followed the launch of the last gen Tacoma, it was the same thing. People hated it. Toyota ruined the Tacoma. But now with the most recent one being launched, people are all about the 4th gen and how it’s so great. It happens every cycle. People will grow to love this one and be furious when it changes, too.
