I would still take a Cascadia back over this pos T680 any day. All the other drivers in the company have the same opinion, shit quality trucks from Kenworth.

My ‘21 Pete just hit 300k miles. Had to get the coolant sensor and then the whole reservoir replaced because it wouldn’t fucking stop beeping at me with the low coolant warning. It would shut the truck off. It still beeps from time to time even when it’s full, but never stays for long and doesn’t force shutdown the truck. So at this point idk what might be wrong. Had to take a magnet and put it against the coolant sensor so I could drive the thing to a dealer, otherwise it’s a tow.

Dealing with the low coolant warning due to a faulty sensor in a '21 Pete with 360k on it. Funny thing is the only reason I'm in this truck is because my other Pete blew out the radiator, so I'm really damn paranoid about that low coolant sensor going off and have to keep pulling over to check.

PACCAR does not make it's own emissions system, those are made my Cummins. The PACCAR electronics can be finicky, and when it comes to emission faults, they're usually resolved by clearing the codes. I've got the OTR diagnostic tool, any time I've had derate warnings in the last 3 years I've been able to clear the codes and not have an issue again until I'm taking the truck from somewhere warm back north in the winter. That usually messes with the sensors in the scr/DPF. But once the codes are cleared it's business as usual. My MX13 has been extremely reliable, coming up on a million miles now.

Let me tell you the issue as a mechanic who works on them daily. 99% of the time it’s a sensor that’s failed. Want to know why? Because they sprinkled them along the hottest parts of the trucks. Heat shield? Best they could do was heat shielding around the wire for intake Nox sensor. Here’s the locations for all the sensors on peterbuilt and Kenworth Cummins motors. Intake Nox- screws into the top of the turbo. Wire follows the right side of the engine down to a bracket that’s hot af all the time. Exhaust Nox- screws into exhaust pipe. Placed above a literal oven. Plastic connectors btw. Don’t worry those never break from eat fatigue /s. Heat protection? Best they could do is some sort of rubber sleeve along the wire. Particulate matter sensor- screwed into exhaust pipe next to the Exhaust Nox. Also placed over the oven. Heat shield? lol no. Temp sensor- same issue Differential pressure sensor- same issue Dosing valve- mounted to the oven. Everything important is made of plastic besides mounting. They are made to cause issues.

View on Reddit #24056646

ursisterstoy@reddit

Could it be from doing 105 mph? On which road is that okay? (Or perhaps I read it wrong and you’re going 105 km/h which is only 65 mph, but neither 65 mph or 105 mph is consistent with the rpms I’m seeing - the rpms tell be you’re doing 73 mph, which is a little more realistic).
View on Reddit #24017087

mvamv@reddit

Not every truck is specced the same with gear ratios, so you can't just assume the truck speed based off engine rpms. My truck runs at about 1500-1600rpm @ 70mph.
View on Reddit #24019322

ursisterstoy@reddit

Oh I know but the 73 mph was just based off my own Freightliner Cascadia that does about 65 mph at 1200 rpms so at 1350 rpms it’s about 73 mph. The 105 came from the display reading 105 which doesn’t match the rpms so it’s either geared slower and that’s only 105 km/hr (65.2 mph) or driver has some very fast rear end gears and they are somehow managing to go 105 mph while only pushing 1325-1350 rpms which is pretty unlikely. It’s a Cascadia and assuming it’s an automated manual with the DT12 transmission then between 65 and 75 mph seems likely given a range of differential ratios that make sense so what exactly is the 105? Is that km/h?
View on Reddit #24019535

AustinTX1985@reddit

Did you even read the post? Op stated they are driving a Kenworth T680, and wish they had a Cascadia. Also, in what world would a truck be capable of 105mph, let alone one having engine issues?
View on Reddit #24020564

bmrt60@reddit

There’s plenty of trucks that CAN do 105. Should obviously not.
View on Reddit #24020994

ursisterstoy@reddit

Exactly. Most of these are owned by owner operators of small companies with only a handful of trucks. Not being governed would be beneficial for places where the speed limit is 70, 75, 80, or 85 mph to actually do the speed limit or 3-5 mph faster where they’re unlikely to get pulled over or cause a serious safety hazard to other drivers. But too many of them that can do 105 mph act like they have road rage and act like people doing 75 mph in 55 mph zones are driving too slow. Because those people do exist and I encounter them on a regular basis I thought OP was doing 105 mph but the rpms didn’t seem to line up with that assessment. OP had since responded. They were only doing 105 **km/hr** which is basically 65.2 mph and there’s no reason at that speed that the engine should just take a shit. It is an MX13 most likely, so that explains it.

Some of the CAT do kick absolute ass. A properly set up C-15 is a joy to drive. I've put some time behind a juiced up 60 series that made me really appreciate what a Detroit can do as well.
View on Reddit #24042551

ursisterstoy@reddit

Yea the 14 liter Detroit 60 series could normally come stock with between 435 and 575 hp at 2100 rpms and between 1550 and 1850 foot pounds of torque stock. It was a serious upgrade over the 11.1 and 12.7 versions that’d cap out at 365hp/1350ft.lbs and 505hp/1650ft.lbs. respectively. I remember these things seeming to shift way better at high rpms but if you could beef up the 14 liter even more it’d hang in there with the modern CX15 Cummins and the old C-15 Caterpillar. The CX15 efficiency series has the same torque as the Detroit 60 Series 14 liter and the horsepower of the 12.7 liter version. The performance series goes up to 565 hp and 2050 ft. lbs. of torque but they also have a productivity series that still caps out at 2050 ft. lbs. of torque but can have up to 605 hp. As for the Cat C-15, that goes up to 595 hp and 2004 ft.lbs. of toque in their industrial applications. They haven’t made them for semis since like 2008. The 3406E, though, that could put out up to 800 hp and 2250 ft lbs of torque. It was produced from 1993-2007 and nothing else comes close without modifications. You can get a 605 hp Cummins I suppose, which has more hp and torque than the C15 industrial engine or about the same as a C16 but we’re talking about the power already possible back in 2007 vs the most powerful 2024 engines made right now. And the Detroit DD15 is only rated for up to 505 hp and 1850 ft. lbs. of torque. 800 vs 605 vs 505. 2250 vs 2150 vs 1850. In comparison the Detroit is gutless. And it’s even worse because a lot of companies opt for the 450 hp version for fuel economy (unless they throw the fuel economy in the trash as their drivers try to climb small hills at 28 mph in 8th gear). With the beefed up caterpillars you didn’t have to struggle to climb hills until you got to the Rocky Mountains or you were 30,000 lbs overweight. With the beefed up Cummins you can usually get by until the Appalachians. With a Detroit try climbing a hill in Ohio or Wisconsin and you’re doing 49 mph.

The stock 3406E is a great engine. Maybe one of the best. I've drive the B model, E model, C-15, and ACERT. E model is my favorite in stock trim. I've driven full gross 105,500 60 series in the PNW. Of course I'm not talking stock engines, but reasonably modified. Tuning, aftermarket intercoolers, larger turbo, different exhaust manifold. I personally was impressed with the performance. Those X15 605 horse Cummins just didn't impress me when I used them. Not sure what it was. Just wasn't a fan. The DD15's get their lunch eaten when pulling against modded 60's.

View on Reddit #24022333

ursisterstoy@reddit

And for that reason I hope to have the money, credit, or a lease-purchase program that doesn’t suck where I can get a Peterbilt with a Cummins and an 18 speed manual transmission. I don’t like the automated manuals and Cummins is probably the only brand still around worth a shit. Detroit is Freightliner only and pretty gutless, Paccar engines are piles of shit, and I can’t see myself enjoying driving anything not made by Daimler Trucks or Paccar. Volvo/Mack and International are not even remotely comparable, even though some people seem to like their Volvos.

View on Reddit #24032954

ursisterstoy@reddit

Yea, I misread that. Thanks. I’ve been in a Freightliner that was traveling down the freeway at 123 mph. I was not driving it but the person who was had already buried the speedometer in 8 low and then they flipped it over to 8 high and got the rpms up to around 2500-2600. They thought they were cool or something and argued over the radio with DOT who told them to slow down because there’s no reason to be doing 200 mph as they told them they put their truck on a dyno and it can only do 123 mph. I assume they were doing the maximum speed the truck was capable of going because the speedometer stopped at 85 mph and it took them about 3 football fields worth of stopping normally before the speedometer would start dropping. And then more recently I was driving through road construction zones where the radar detected speeds pop up warning people to slow down. Most people pretend speed limits in construction zones are irrelevant so they don’t even slow down and those people were doing 74-75 mph. And then I had a person fly past me and pass those people faster than the people doing 75 mph passed me when I was doing the speed limit of 55-60 mph, 65 mph at the most because that’s what my company governs their trucks at. That person was easily doing at least 105 mph. And yea Kenworth T680 is a whole different set of problems compared to Freightliner Cascadia. I actually used to like Kenworth before Caterpillar dropped out of the semi-truck engine industry and before Paccar started putting automated transmissions in their trucks. Now you can get any Kenworth you want as long as it has a Paccar MX13 and a Paccar 12 speed autoshift. Two total piles of shit are required as stock options and Kenworth doesn’t show any alternatives for these on their website. If you go over to the other Paccar company you can get either Paccar engine or a choice of one or two Cummins engines plus you can select between two different lines of Eaton automated manuals, two different Paccar automated manuals (12 speed or 18 speed) and any of the Eaton manual transmissions still being produced. If you want a Paccar vehicle and you don’t want it to be a total pile of shit you basically have to get a Peterbilt with a 560 or 605 hp Cummins and either the 13 speed or the 18 speed RTLO manual transmission made by Eaton. Detroit is not much better than Paccar in terms of engine quality but at least Detroit has more experience at making engines even before they were bought out by Freightliner and they decided to connect their own automated manual transmission behind their engine because they designed them to work together as a package. I’d prefer a manual transmission but the Detroit autoshift works well enough to get the job done once you stop getting annoyed by the way it shifts.

View on Reddit #24020392

ursisterstoy@reddit

So, yea, I was right despite someone else giving me the downvote. I saw 105 and my truck goes about that speed (105 km/h or 65 mph) closer to 1200 rpms. It seemed like a reasonable guess. Slightly slower differential ratio, slightly higher rpms, same speed. But if you were actually doing 105 mph (closer to 2000 rpms) and you were holding it there for longer periods of time then I’d expect something to start falling apart as 1400-1700 rpms is generally the “safe” range for these engines and much faster and they start to overheat and all sorts of other things start going wrong. I have been in a truck that had all of the valves and rockers switched for performance and they’d have the valve covers off regularly to do tune ups so the engine didn’t grenade itself and they were able to push 123 mph closer to 2500 rpms with a Caterpillar engine with a double overdrive 13 speed. Good luck doing that with a gutless Detroit. Not that anyone should ever be driving that fast, but I regularly get passed by people who are doing 75 while my company decided it’s a cool idea to govern their trucks at 65 and then those people doing 75 mph would get passed by some owner operator with a beefed up Peterbilt faster than they passed me. People still do drive at 105 mph. And I know the other people were doing about 75 mph because they were doing it in a work zone where the signs light up telling them how fast they are going and tell them to slow down and they were going the same speed the whole way through. A lot of companies govern their trucks to between 73 and 75 mph which makes more sense than 65 mph considering the actual speed limits and the only people doing 105 mph own their own trucks and think the freeway is their own personal race track as though showing up at the customer 12 hours before their appointment is going to make them any more money than driving like a sane person but it does give them some extra time on their clock for the next days after they wind up taking a longer break before making the delivery.
