Trying to work extra and I get the 3rd degree, okay I'll just go home then

I worked the extra board at the company formerly known as Yellow. We had a guy try to get extra work, but in a much less honest way. He had a team bid Monday-Friday. When returning home, he would sign the extra board, even though he wasn’t supposed to, go sleep his truck, and walk in 10 hours later expecting work. If any extra board driver was even a minute late, he’d be in dispatch’s face trying to steal their shift. Guy was a weasel. He started the same day as me and two others, but had a “cousin” clock in on a blank timesheet the week before. He knew how disorganized the place was. He claimed they’d called him to start a week before our actual first day, but no trainers showed up. The linehaul manager went to his church, so he believed him and bumped him up three spots on the seniority list. He got a bid while the rest of us stayed on the extra board until the company died. Anyway. As much as the company was poorly managed, I definitely noticed that dispatchers wouldn’t give out runs in the most efficient manner and I do believe it was to make sure everyone had work. In our case, business *heavily* fluctuated in the last months, from “unlimited overtime allowed” to “you cannot work more than 8 hours if running hourly.” (LA shuttle shifts worked hourly, true linehaul did mileage.) Sometimes, they’d have the same group of us going back and forth between the rail and our terminals all day because we had so many pups and containers coming in. Other times, I’d be told “We have nothing at the rail right now” when I’d be watching our stuff get unloaded from a train. I mentioned it to one dispatcher who was cool with me and he said, “We’re keeping some stuff for night shift. We’re kinda slow right now.” Sometimes, it was literally just competition between terminals. I’d drop off at the LA terminal and hand them my paperwork. They’d assign me a set of trailers. Then I’d call my dispatch and they’d say “No, fuck that. He’s trying to make you do what he needs done now. You work for our terminal, not his. Bobtail to (wherever) instead, we have a set coming back here, and don’t ever ask other terminals for your assignments. Ask us.” Then, some particularly well-managed terminals would say, “Always ask us for your assignment. We already had you staged with a loaded set to the rail before your home terminal took it away and gave you an empty box going back to them. Don’t they have enough empties over there?”
