Slightly unbelievable that the Raptor is several decades old yet feels brand new and cutting edge still. It's so old it was featured in the Playstation era Ace Combat games 😳

I had a game on the Sega Genesis called "F-22 Interceptor". It was a kind of shitty but interesting for the time flight sim. Came out in '91.

I used to play an MS-DOS game called Jetfighter 2 that had the YF23 (the F22's competitor) back in 1990 and it had an expansion in 1992 that had the F22 (after it won that competition). And now I feel old as shit.

Change the plane to su57 or a flanker, and the whole sub would be “it’s irrelevant in modern war”, “good luck in dogfight”, “manoeuvrability is just for show”.

What does stall recovery have to do with war?

diezel_dave@reddit

This is testing of flight control software's ability to auto-recover from an intentional spin.  Nothing to do with maneuverability.

I lived out at Edwards in the mid 2000s, they would still be pulling maneuvers like this.

I get the feeling that most of the time the F-22 does demos on air shows they don’t show it’s full potential. I wonder if they went all in if it could do the same breathtaking routines the Su-35 does. I bet it could do most if not all of it, but it’s a shame we don’t get to see that side of the Raptor.

Honestly it's insane seeing the F-22 in low-res footage. It gives you an appreciation for how ungodly advanced that thing was for the time and even is now.

*pushes up glasses* um actually the vein on the boom labeled “sideslip” doesn’t measure beta, rather it measures flank angle.

I'm just throwing this out there for questioning how did the YF-23 platform did in that same situation ?!

Imagine trying to sneak/hike into the desert around Area 51, being a bit dehydrated, and seeing that shit fall from the sky in the early 90’s *yooo is that an alien?!*

Guys the F22 is really starting to loose it, we really should let him eat.

That’s a YF-22. Probably around 1991.

It's an F-22, the YF-22 had more triangular horizontal stabs, with sharp points on their inboard trailing edges. The F-22 stabs have that pointed corner of the inboard trailing edge cut away, which is just visible in this video.
