Any expats who moved to Saudi Arabia for lucrative paying salaries working in their usual profession?

How was your experience? Would you do it again? What did you wish you knew before you made the leap? How did you find the cultural differences and what was it like living in a theocracy? What were your colleagues like? Did you go alone or take a partner and children? What sacrifices, (if any) did you feel you made during your time living and working there? What was the key driver motivating you to move to such a unique destination in order to take up your offer of employment?

Saudi today isn’t Saudi of even 5 years ago. The people are generally friendly and it’s more “normal” than countries like the UAE or Qatar. I live in Dubai and it’s very different.
The Middle East isn’t for everyone but it’s an interesting and dynamic part of the world. I have friends who lived there for many years with their families and loved it. I also know people who hated it.
If you aren’t sure go and have a look. Don’t believe everything you read, go and find out for yourself.

You need a job to get residency anywhere in the Middle East. Your employer sponsors you. If you don’t have a job you lose your residency.

Hey! Do you mind me asking what field you work in? No is an acceptable answer.
I’m from New Zealand, and I’m still equally poised between picking between Medicine or Aerospace Engineering. Im really just looking for something which pays decent enough to have savings with good work life balance in the GCC countries.
Since there are so many engineers from all around the world in the GCC, it might not have as much job security as being a healthcare provider though Im happy to be corrected. What do you think?

I just got here in October…. It’s been great. I would come over without reservation. Yes, there is plenty that is different but if the compensation package is acceptable I would not hesitate to come on over. I hope to find more work to do when the contract I’m on finishes the Scope of Work.

I have four kids and want to move, love to hear what process did you take?

How did it go for you? Did you take it?

As an engineer I have heard horror stories of working in Saudi Arabia. There is a good chance you will not make it out.

As an engineer, you are usually the reason people don’t make it out.

Ya, my colleagues were the ones who made it out. The labor work force though...

Lived there for 6 years in O&G industry. Of course it depends on the profession, but it’s not much worse than many western countries when it comes to safety. I would recommend that if the information you received worries you, trust your gut.

I’d love to learn more. If you’re willing to share more, I can DM you.
